Pad opened the door, still in uniform.

“Come on in. We can talk out back. Ellie’s resting.”

Paul followed Pad through the house to the back deck.

“Something to drink?”

“Anything wet.”

Pad went inside and returned with a bag of pretzels and two sodas. “Keeping a clear head is wise.”

“Yeah.” Paul twisted the cap off and foam bubbled over onto his hand. Swearing softly, he wiped it off on his pants.

“Where do we stand?” Pad asked.

“Judy and Walker went to Chester, and I’ve been trolling the Internet. So far, I haven’t found anything remotely hinky.”

Paul leaned back in the chair and rubbed his hand over his eyes. “The usual, address and stuff.”

“Does Judy have the address of his apartment?”

“I sent it over, and they’ll swing by to check it out.”

“Do you think he’ll have her at his place?” Pad asked.

“No, he’s a crafty S-O-B. They won’t be there, but maybe Judy will find something helpful.”

“She’s a good cop. She’ll turn over some rocks.”

Paul’s hands played with the bottle cap. “What if he hurts her, or worse?”

“He won’t do anything stupid. Ryan wants her in his life. My guess, he’s taken her someplace with the intent to convince her this was in her best interest and he loves her.”

“Would he really think it would work?”

“For a rational person, no. But Ryan’s not thinking clearly.”

“He’s jeopardized his career. All because he can’t let Dani go?”

Before Pad could respond, Paul’s phone rang.

Paul looked down. “It’s Judy.”

“Hey, Jude, I’m with Pad. I’m going to put you on speaker phone.”

Pad said, “What have you found out?”

“We swung by his apartment. His neighbors haven’t seen him for a couple of days. But as we were getting ready to leave, his cleaning lady was going into his apartment. We asked her a few questions.” Judy’s voice was steady as she relayed the facts.

“Well, what did she say?” Paul demanded.

“It seems like she started cleaning after Dani left. He was always respectful, paid on time, and very tidy. When we asked if there had been any women staying with him, she said no. He mentioned his heart had been broken and he hoped someday to win back the love of his life.”

“Did he happen to mention Dani specifically?” Pad questioned.

“No, he didn’t,” Walker interjected. “We showed our badges and asked if we could walk through the apartment, and she happily let us in, but then asked if we would promise not to tell Mr. Ryan.”

Paul snorted in response. “She didn’t realize you didn’t have jurisdiction and she shouldn’t let you in?”

“Nope and we weren’t going to say anything more. We just looked around, thanked her, and left,” Walker stated.

Judy said, “And before you ask, there was nothing to indicate Dani had been there recently. But there was a picture of them on his nightstand.”

“After all this time, he’s kept a picture by the bed?”

Paul began to pace the deck. “What’s next?”

“Paul.” Judy’s voice cracked over the phone. “Sit down and listen.”

Paul stopped mid-stride.

Pad said, “How did you know he was pacing?”

“It’s his tell.
