KELWIN AND Zaree dismounted their horses just out of sight within the forest above the castle, then tied them to a tree branch. Theyâd be safe enough there, or at least as safe as was possible.
âI donât hear a crowd,â Zaree said, her voice sounding raw. âArin said they perform executions at sunset.â
Kelwin looked at her for a moment before letting out an expansive sigh. The horses were as old as Arin had said they were, and that, on top of Zareeâs obvious fear of them, had slowed them down. âTell me what your stones say.â
Zareeâs brow creased. âIf someone sees me doing thatâ¦.â
âI know,â Kelwin said with a nod. âBut thereâs no one around and Iâll keep watch anyway. Iâd just feel better knowing what weâre heading into.â
Zaree looked at him for a long moment before nodding. She took the familiar bag and cloth from her pocket and kneeled down in the dirt while she cast the stones. Kelwin glanced around to make sure no one was approaching, then looked back to see a deep frown settling onto Zareeâs face. âWhat is it?â
âThings are not as they seem,â she said. âIâm not certain whether thatâs good or bad. Thereâs also the suggestion of an important or fated encounter.â
âIf itâs all the same to you, I think Iâll take that as an omen Tasis is still alive,â Kelwin noted as Zaree tucked her stones and the handkerchief back into her pocket. âThereâs no reason to believe Tasis couldnât have done something to save himself, not after what we both saw him do at the inn. Letâs walk down to the castle and see if we can find a guard to chat up.â
âA guard?â Zaree whispered as she followed Kelwin. âAre you insane?â
âTrust me,â Kelwin answered quietly as he pulled up his hood, making sure it was securely in place. When they reached the gates, he stopped in front of the guard who was standing there, looking bored. âHey, friend, are we too late? I heard the kingâs caught the magic user from Inafain.â
The guard laughed, and Kelwin had to remind himself that punching the man would probably be a bad idea. âYou are indeed too late, Iâm afraid. The guard in the furnace room is young, though. You could probably grease his palm with a little gold to see the body and get a couple of kicks in.â
Kelwin could see Zaree was struggling to keep her composure, so he just nodded and smiled. âI think Iâll do just that,â he told the guard. âWhere can I find the furnace room?â
The guard motioned behind him with a vague gesture. âDown by the dungeons. Just head down, no one will stop you. Theyâre all too busy celebrating.â
âMy thanks, friend,â Kelwin said with a nod. âIâll see if I can send some of the celebration your way, shall I?â
âI wouldnât say no to a wench if youâve a mind to talk one into visiting a poor lonely guard,â the man said with a mock salute.
