A day at an art gallery was just the peace and quiet she’d needed. It would give her a chance to think, contemplate and look at pretty things.

She was still angry at Debbie and hadn’t responded to the late-night text offering excessive apologies and a promise to ‘make up for it’. She was being made a fool of. She was so angry at herself for putting up with it and so angry with Debbie for making her feel guilty.

She was lost in thought when she caught sight of ‘Jen’ Deal staring at a colourful portrait of a Rhino balancing on a lemon. She hoped to squeeze past unnoticed; the last thing she needed was Jen’s sunny disposition and those distractingly entrancing green eyes.

“Sarah!” ‘Bugger ’

“Jen! I didn’t see you there!” The lie slithered off her tongue like a well-oiled snake.

“ I didn’t expect to see you inside on a gorgeous day like today, why aren’t you out frolicking on the beach?”

‘Frolicking?’

“Well I’m not really one for the crowds or the heat, or the beach come to think of it.”

Jen laughed and leaned forward, conspiratorially.

“Well, I think you might have come to the wrong place!”

Sarah forced a smile and tried to think of a polite way of telling her to sod off.

“Come on I’ll take you down to the beach and get you an ice cream. You look like you could do with cheering up.”

She didn’t want to be cheered up. She wanted to look at art and tell herself she was taking her mind off things whilst wallowing in self-pity and hate. But as she looked at those eyes, that smile and the soft black hair tucked delicately behind her ear, she felt herself melting and mumbled ‘ok’.

Jen chattered away as she led Sarah down to the long white beach stretching along the horizon, the bright blue sky reflected in the clear water and the sound of waves was lost beneath a cacophony of shouting, screaming, and laughter.

Suddenly she was handed an ice-cream with a chocolate flake. She hadn’t even noticed Jen getting it.

“Oh, you didn’t have to!” She said as the ice cream started dripping onto her hand.

“My pleasure!” She took hold of Sarah’s arm and led her down to the sea. “Now tell me Miss Sparks, and I do have to say that is a marvellous name, why have you travelled all the way down to lovely, sunny, practically-tropical Cornwall only to wander around an art gallery looking like you’ve just been slapped?”

‘Because I have just been slapped!’ She thought, every time Debbie set her up then let her fall it was like a hard back slap across the face.

“I’ve always hated my name.” She said, sidestepping the question.

“Really?! Why?! I think it’s a brilliant name! Miles better than ‘Deal’, which might as well be ‘Dull’.”

“I nearly changed it once.”

Jen looked at her with abject horror.

“NO! You can’t! I love your name. I’d marry you just to get your name.” Her tone suddenly changed. “Of course, there would
