After we had supped, the king sent for a reed mat, and another of palm, and a pillow of leaves to lie on that night. And the king with his two wives went to sleep in a place apart.6 When day came, while dinner was in preparation, I walked about that island, where I saw in the king’s houses many vessels of gold and little food. Then we dined on rice and fish only. And after dinner I said to the king by signs that I would gladly see the queen. And he replied that he was willing. Then we went, the whole company, to the top of a high mountain, where was the queen’s house. Entering it, we bowed to her, and she to me, and then I seated myself beside her. She was making a palm mat to lie on. In her house were fastened and hanging some porcelain jars, and four bells of metal, one larger than the others, and two smaller ones, for ringing. Many male and female slaves who served her were there. And these houses were made like the others aforesaid. After we had taken our leave, we returned to the king’s house, where we were at once given refreshment [ƒ. 55ν] of sugarcane. The greatest commodity in that island is abundance of gold. They showed us certain small valleys, making signs to us that there was as much gold there as they had hairs, but that they had no iron nor tools to mine it, and moreover that they would not take the trouble to do so. That part of the island is one and the same land with Butuan and Calaghan, and lies toward Bohol, and borders on Mazzaua. And because we shall return again to that island, I say no more of it.
The couching of the said king and of the others
