As Kai stared at the prostrate man on the floor he struggled to repress the urge to smash his head against the wall until it was nothing more than a soggy red pulp. Without realising what he was doing the shadows in the room stretched until they blocked out all natural light. His eyes adjusted to the absolute darkness while the man on the floor whimpered in terror.

After taking a series of long slow breaths he slowly regained a semblance of calm. The darkness receded and natural daylight flooded the room through the open windows.

“Stand up,” said Kai, and the man jumped to do as he was told. “What was your name again?” he asked, having already forgotten.

“Doggett.”

He knew the man was one of Akosh’s people but recently Doggett had joined the growing ranks of those who’d been enslaved by his servant, Marran. It was this compulsion to tell Marran the truth at all times, even if it meant betraying his Mother, which had led to this revelation.

“They’re planning an alliance, against me?” said Kai, making sure he’d heard the man correctly.

“Yes. The mage, Munroe, a girl and Akosh are going to ambush you.” Doggett spoke without hesitation but blood was now trickling from both nostrils. He was being forced to turn against Akosh, someone who he held in the highest regard. Such disloyalty would be causing irreparable damage to his brain. He might only have a few days to live.

“Do you know where?” asked Kai.

“I have all the details,” said Doggett, coughing up a wad of bloody phlegm. Maybe Kai had been generous with his estimate. It looked as if Doggett had only a few hours.

“Tell me everything,” said Kai, his eyes gleaming with malice.
