CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Machete and his band of followers rode toward the old encampment they had used before by the twin canyons. When they reached it, the group quickly went about their normal routine, setting up the tent and the rest of the camp. A few of the followers rode into one of the canyons and uncovered their stash of supplies they had left there the last time, which consisted mostly of canned goods and sweet potatoes. There was already a round circle of stones for the fire and it didn’t take long before the fire was going and the food was cooking. Machete was sitting in his chair proudly watching his flock, smiling at the weak minds of most young people and how easily he could manipulate them for his own personal pleasure. He had learned how to pick the best ones out for his use; the runaways who left their homes feeling unloved and unappreciated and especially the dimwitted ones who just didn’t seem to have any sense in the first place. He was sure he would have been able to convert the one they called Ralphy back in Covington, if he had more time to work on him, but he didn’t. After a while, Bethany brought Machete a cup of coffee, which he accepted with both hands smiling up at her warmly.

“Who are the best shots with rifles in our group?” he asked her. Bethany didn’t ask any questions, she just looked around at the group and picked out two young men who she knew were pretty good shots with rifles.

“Harvey and Steven are the best shots I know in the group,” she told him. “They do most of the hunting for meat.”

“After supper, bring them into the tent so that I can speak with them.”

“Of course my leader,” she said as she went to talk to the two young men. After supper, Machete was enjoying some tequila in his tent when there was a rap on the canvas flap.

“Machete, I have Harvey and Steven with me,” announced Bethany. “May we enter?”

“Yes, of course.”

Bethany opened the canvas flap and let Harvey and Steven inside the tent. Both of the young men took their hats off out of respect, a worried look on their faces, not sure why they had been summoned. Machete looked up at Bethany and smiled.

“Pour them both a drink of my tequila,” he ordered. Bethany quickly picked up two glasses and poured tequila into each of them and handed them to the two young men.

“Please, sit down and relax,” said Machete in a relaxed tone. “You are not in any trouble if that is what you think.”

The two sat down on the ground and relaxed a little and each of them took a sip of their tequila and smiled up at Machete, who smiled at Bethany as she left the tent. Machete refilled his glass and took a sip of the tequila and sat it down on the wooden crate he used for a table.

“Bethany tells me you are both very good shots with a rifle,” he said.
