Chapter 14

I closed the door behind us, the soft click echoing in the quiet hotel room. It felt heavier with the weight of unspoken words between us.

Sam tossed his keys onto the table, and I could almost hear the gears turning in his head. We were both lost in thought after our conversation with Alan. It was unsettling to think about the bigger picture—thinking about leaving Harmony Bay behind, about Sam giving up everything he'd worked for his whole life—terrified me.

But the unknown was always terrifying, wasn't it? That didn't mean that it wasn't a good thing.

Sam opened his laptop and plopped down on the couch, the screen illuminating his face.

I joined him, sitting cross-legged on the other side of the couch.

We sat in silence for a while. Sam clicked around, and my thoughts drifted. First, back home, then to Josephine and Hannah's connection to me. And then to the murder.

"It's hard to think that someone can do something to awful," I said, thinking out loud. "I know the world can be full of horrible things, but every time I think about someone going as far as murder, it rattles me."

"I don't know how people can be so heartless," Sam agreed. "And I always see that side of the world in my line of work."

"Is that why you're thinking of leaving it behind?" I asked softly.

Sam didn't answer me, and we fell back into silence.

"So, what do you think?" I asked, changing the topic. "About the murder, I mean. You said you wanted to figure out what was going. Well, part of you."

Sam nodded. "Yeah. I guess it's the cop part of me that can't let this thing go. Occupational hazard, right?" He offered me a rueful smile. "Marissa keeps popping up on my radar."

I sighed and sat back. "She is acting weird… but given the circumstances, how else can she be expected to act? She's a wedding planner and someone in the wedding party just died."

Sam sighed, rubbing his temples. "I don’t know, Cass. The more I think about it, the more she stands out. It’s just... something doesn’t sit right with me about her. She was way too eager to control everything."

"Maybe she has an occupational hazard, too?" I ventured.

Sam shook his head. "I mean more than that. With things that had nothing to do with the wedding. She might just be a bossy person, but she was always hanging around, inserting herself into things. Almost like she needed to know what was going on at all times."

I nodded, remembering the way Marissa had hovered, her eyes darting to every little detail like she was calculating every possible outcome. "It’s like she has this obsession with control. She gets all weird and twitchy if things aren’t going her way. And don't even get me started on that hair and makeup trial—she practically dragged Hannah out of the kitchen."

Sam cracked a small smile. "Maybe she just likes being in charge—making sure everyone dances to her tune."

I rolled my eyes, nudging his arm with my elbow.
