“Sure was nice of you to come help me this morning.” Lynne watched Kurt tinker on her laptop putting together the PowerPoint slideshow for her lecture on Jane Austen. Not being a computer guru, Lynne recruited technical help whenever possible. Otherwise, she would spend hours trying to figure out how to do something that could take a more experienced person only a few minutes. Kurt had always been there when she needed him. He’d even built the website for her Master’s thesis.

“Why not? It’s sweet of you to help me.”

“Haven’t you ever heard the saying nice guys finish last? They never get the girl.”

“Yeah, but it’s not true. Besides, I always thought the saying meant the nice guys made sure the lady had a climax first.”

“Hmmm, never thought of that. I like your explanation better.

“All done.” Kurt flashed through dozens of pictures on the computer screen.

“Oh you are so awesome. And, you’re nice, too!” She beamed at him. “I don’t think I could have done it on my own. Don’t forget this time you got the girl.”

“You’re right, but I still had to have Elvis. Even though you said I was the best.”

“Don’t be jealous of Troy.” She was irritated. Why did he have to bring up Troy again? Couldn’t he accept what they had done and move on?

“How can I not be? He’s everything I’m not, and you want to see him again, don’t you?”

“Kurt, I’m not going to argue with you. Besides, if you must know, I’ve already seen him again.”

“What the fuck?”

“Kurt! Watch your language!”

“I would, if I were around a lady, but I’m not. You’re a slut, Lynne.”

She walked up to him and poked him in the chest with one finger. “How dare you?! Troy helped me change my tire and then took me out for drinks later. It’s not like I was cheating. You and I aren’t exclusive.”

“Yeah, good ol’ Kurt always the nice guy. I’m good enough to be your friend, but not your lover. I waited years for you to see me as more than a friend. I finally get up the nerve to make a move and what do I get in return? One good time and then you decide you need another guy in your bed. What’s the big attraction? Do you like it rough?” He clamped his hands on her biceps.

“Stop it, Kurt. You’re scaring me.”

“I can do everything Troy can. I can be your everything, Lynne.”

He kissed her, fiercely, his lips crashed down on hers with a passion she didn’t realize he felt. Kurt had always been so conservative and shy around her.
