CHAPTER 23
When Lurch made it back to the ranch, he his first stop was to the bunkhouse to make sure the men were off doing what they should be and not hanging around harassing Kerry.
Inside, he found Kerry standing in the kitchen looking startled and almost like sheâd been caught doing somethings she shouldnât be. He spent a few minutes there with her. Fetched his tools and resisted the urge to kiss her breathless before he left.
Glad at least he hadnât had to run the men off. It seemed they were off doing what they should. He would have to check on them to be sure things were going as they should be before he went back to work on his house.
Next stop was the barn where he found Stretch puttering around making himself busy. Or at least making himself appear to be busy. He assigned Stretch to unloading the truck. He gave instructions for the supplies to get unloaded. Some of the pellets were to be left here to be used in the bunkhouse, and some to be taken to the house for his use. He gave directions for everything heâd purchase and where Stretch was to put it. Then he took one of the dirt bikes and went to the fence where Ghost and Watt were supposed to be working.
Finding them where they were supposed to be, doing what they were supposed to be doing, made Lurch feel a little better about being gone overnight. Not that he planned to do it every night, but he was glad to know that they could go be at least self-starters for what he had them doing before heâd gone.
After making sure they had enough materials to keep them busy for a while. Lurch took the dirt bike back to the foremanâs house. Stretch had already unloaded the supplies heâd bought to fix the plumbing, as well as the tools Lurch had left with him earlier, so he went to work.
Once got started, the leak only took about twenty minutes to fix. When heâd finished, he stood back and surveyed his handiwork while he waited a few minutes for the glue to set so he could turn on the water and make sure he didnât have any remaining leaks.
Once heâd established that there were no leaks, he started cleaning up the plumbing materials, so he could get to work repairing the sheetrock. Lurch was more practiced with the sheetrock than the plumbing, but the damage was more extensive. He had to replace a good chunk of the sheeting on the entire wall, but this would take more time because it wasnât just hanging it. Once heâd hung the sheetrock he had to tape, mud and finish the wall and then it would have to be painted.
He didnât know what color to paint it, whether it should be the cream color that was on the walls now, or something else? Since he was only here temporarily, he should probably check with London about what color to paint.
