My brother was a known asshole and used to ribbing people about anything. He was a pretty no-nonsense type of guy, which I think people usually gave him a wide berth. I didn’t give him shit because I was the oldest, and I, too, had my assholish ways. Bret was just gruff with his shit. A normal conversation seemed as if he was barking at someone.
Why the fuck he was grilling me about Yadira was a mystery. Ma must have called and told him that I was getting married or something. I knew once she shared that Yadira enjoyed the Taste Test menu, she saw stars. Her and Auntie had this weird thing about the type of food that , and instead of asking if he could meet her, he started other shit.
Truth be told, I didn’t feel right saying that shit, but that was the truth. We were fucking. She scratched my car, and I wanted her to scratch my back—short and sweet of it. But last night was different, seeing her standing next to Ma, who was beaming as if she knew the woman was the one. Was she? I didn’t fucking know. I just knew the woman owed me money, and instead of collecting it, we both benefited from her bout of crazy.
Who the fuck scratches cars when they get upset?
Once I hung up on his high-strung ass, I continued to watch the sunset in my backyard, where I began to see what Mama wanted—a family, two swings on the tree, laughter, a kiddie pool, and maybe (just maybe) a grill as I held a thick, curvy woman who was pregnant with my next child.
What in the fuck was wrong with me? It had to be because I slept with a woman for the first time in life without fucking. It was all pretty simple to me. I needed food to live, and I needed fucking too. But sex with Yadira was more than fucking. She didn’t fuck. She got into it, made it something different, and so did I. I never got into it. I did not curl into a woman, whisper sweet anything in her ear. It was a transaction, but not with Yadira.
The plan was to let her sleep, order some breakfast, and take her to work. She was tired from yesterday, and so was I. I rushed her because I wanted to see her. However, I wanted to see her again tonight and tomorrow. I was fucking losing it.
Stepping back into the room after watching the sunrise and set me for my day, something was off. Her dress wasn’t on the floor where I left it, and her shoes were missing. The bed was empty, and the feeling of dread hit me harder than I anticipated.
“What the fuck?” I strode through the room to find no one in the bathroom, living room, or kitchen.
She was gone.
FUCK!
She had left. Maybe she thought I left, but she should have been able to see me. What
