Chapter Fifteen

Beware the Formidable Gills of Amanikable

Kitty, Bart, and I mourn and salute the remains of our paraw. I know it sounds so melodramatic. But the torture this boat went through under the apocalyptic temper tantrum of the sea god was just horrible. It totally deserves a proper send-off.

“That’s that. So long, boat!” I take a tiny piece of it—about the size of my thumb—and tuck it inside my pocket.

Bart raises an eyebrow. “What is that?”

“My backup plan.” I give him and Kitty a tiny piece each. “Try not to lose it. Because if I lose my piece, we’ll use one of yours.”

“Okay. I’ll keep this safe,” Kitty says, putting the piece in her bag. I’m glad my sister trusts me enough to do it without question. She knows that whatever it is I’m doing is for our own good.

Bart does the same, hiding the little piece in his backpack. Like Kitty, he trusts me, though he obviously doubts some of my ideas. “Sana di tayo mapahamak dito,” he says.

“When have my plans ever gotten us into trouble?” I demand.

Kitty and Bart answer me at the same time. “All the time!”

“Whatever,” I say, rolling my eyes. “You two underestimate me so—”

Suddenly the water recedes from the shore we’re standing on, exposing the seafloor. Fish caught in the sudden low tide are bouncing on the surface like popcorn. A crab widens its eyes, then hurriedly buries itself in the sand.

We turn to look behind us. Hearing the loud ocean roar, we don’t need to guess who’s the culprit.

“Now what?” I hiss. The sea god just won’t leave us alone.

Amanikable pops up over the tsunami-like wave. I grab Kitty and Bart, shielding them from the impending crash.

The sea god releases the wave on my head. But instead of the full force of a huge tsunami, I feel only the impact of a pail of water.

“Don’t flatter yourself,” says the sea god’s voice. “You aren’t that special for me to kill personally. See you around, Salamangkero. Don’t litter on the beach!”

After drenching us from head to toe, the sea takes the remains of our paraw.

“I really, really do not like this god,” I grumble, sputtering as I try to wipe water off my face with the front of my shirt. But it’s no use—I’m totally drenched. We’re all totally drenched, and my phone is ruined, no thanks to the petty god of the sea.

“Shh! He’ll hear you,” warns Bart. He holds out his hand. “Give me your phone. I’m not a whiz at combining tech with Salamangka like Kuya Silverio is, but I’ll give it a shot. I can repair it, at least.”

“Thanks,” I say, pretending not to hear him praise the man who strapped me in the back of his vehicle with flimsy gift ribbons. After I got pushed off a mountain by Evil Tinker Bell and almost drowned at the hands of a grouchy sea god, Kuya Silverio’s pickup truck from hell seems tame in comparison.

“Where to now, Ate?” Kitty frowns at the blue barrier of light.
