Brook Trout Resort
Faithful Falls lay tucked away in the northeast corner of Idaho. The tourist town was just a speck on the map with a population of less than five hundred. From the research Luke had done, the little town had not changed in the last century, give or take five people.
The intimate town had one main street—Lake Drive. Despite its size, it had all the amenities Luke would need: a grocery, a barber, a gas station, and a bar and grill, called The Peak.
The minute Luke arrived, he felt at home. It reminded him a bit of Juneau, with the mountains and lake. There was only one significant difference: the lively locals. Becky hadn’t been kidding when she’d called them good-natured, rowdy people. Everyone he’d met within the first week had been friendly and animated. Luke found himself overwhelmed daily. Not one person refrained from questioning him about his personal life. They acted as if he owed them his life story. He dodged the questions as best he could. But Luke struggled with the general chatter, never having been much of a conversationalist. The people were not off-putting by any stretch, they were only the nosiest people he had ever met.
Luke hadn’t even met the Queen Busybody, Louise Seaton. Lord only knew what that woman would do to him. He expected she would place a hex on him or slip a truth serum in his whisky. The way Becky had described Louise, the white-haired woman was everywhere and knew everything, and she could make anyone divulge their most precious secrets within minutes. Luke wasn’t in any hurry to meet her.
Sitting in a worn leather office chair, he looked around the small log cabin that was his office. There wasn’t much to the small space—a woodstove in one corner and a desk in the other, a small mini-fridge, and a cheap metal filing cabinet alongside the desk. A computer and desk phone finished off the room. As plain as it was, Luke liked it. He preferred a clean, clutter-free workspace; it suited his minimalist tendencies. And now, being a divorced man, free of his shopaholic wife, he could finally live the tranquil life he desired.
He stood to peek out the wood-framed window. The mesmerizing view of Lake Brooks soothed him. Tall pines surrounded the lake, shading the cabin. The scent of pine from outside mixed with that of the ash in the stove was all he needed to make him happy—just the quiet solitude of the cabin and nature.
Luke had always been a rugged man, but he hadn’t been able to flex his love of flannel shirts or grow a beard while in the Marines and married to Renee. Now he could embrace his inner mountain man, sporting flannel and a face full of hair without hearing any complaints. At last, he could be his own man.
A firm knock on the door startled him out of his thoughts.
He opened the door. A lanky teenage boy with tousled brown hair stood there with a broad, cheesy grin.
