I walked into the hotel room to find Davey, Michael Longley, and Cecily split between two beds and a couch. I nodded at the woman, a good friend whom I hadn’t seen outside of a computer screen in years. She looked good, rested and confident with red hair pulled back off her face and a dusting of freckles on her cheeks.

“I appreciate the assist,” I said as I heard Mia walking in behind me, closing the sliding glass door.

“What can I say? Old habits die hard,” she said, standing from the chair, she extended a hand to Mia, who shook it vigorously. “I’m Cecily. John and I served together.”

“Hey!” Davey interjected.

“With this idiot,” Cecily said, motioning to Davey. “You must be the girlfr—”

“This is Detective Mia White,” I said, cutting Cecily off. “She’s helped me on a few cases back down in Florida.”

“Helped you?” Micheal asked, standing up and tipping the ridiculous looking cowboy hat he insisted on slapping atop his head the instant we got out of the eye-line of anyone he was afraid would be chasing us. “She’s the one with the badge on her chest. I’d think that would go the other way around.”

“Maybe, but she’s not the one who was kidnapped and asked to help find a missing person. So, maybe my reputation speaks for itself,” I said, before adding (in a much lower voice), “For better or worse.”

“I think it’s a pretty damned good reputation,” Cecily said, hearing what I’d said under my breath. “But I might be a little biased.”

“No,” Mia said flatly. “Lucky has been pretty impressive since he’s moved to Bonita Springs. There was even talk of him joining the police force at one point, but he was too stubborn to speak about that seriously.” She looked over at me for just an instant. “He’s too stubborn for a lot of things, it seems.”

“We need to plant our noses to the grindstone,” I said. “Chase said the Swampland Bomber was going to attack in three days. That means we have seventy-two hours to find Debbie and get the intel from that lunatic.” I thought about how long I had been unconscious back at the casino. “Less time now, unfortunately.”

“Or, I can go get that information out of him myself,” Michael said, eyeing the door. “He’s a pampered little rich boy. Something tells me a couple of Texas-sized punches to the jaw will shake that intel right out of his mouth.”

“And how are you going to get to him?” I asked defiantly. “Don’t you think I thought about that? He’s got more security than a bank vault, and even if you managed to get past the legions of bodyguards between you and him there’s no reason to believe a beating from you would be enough to get him to open up to you.” I glared at the man. “Even if it was Texas-sized.”

“Well, there has to be something we can do,” Michael said. “I’m a Texas Ranger. We don’t play ball with criminals.”

“If
