“You made sure all of them got the pizza?” I asked, looking over at Davey as he, Rachel, and I walked over to the gatehouse. It had been about half an hour since Davey drove back out of Oliver Black’s property, and judging from the fact that there hadn’t been any movement from within the house that we could see for about ten minutes now, it seemed that was long enough for the drugs to take effect.

“I sat a bunch of pizzas in front of a group of guys. None of them weighed less than two hundred pounds. I promise you, they all got pizza,” Davey replied.

“Good. We don’t need any surprises in there,” I muttered as we closed the gap between ourselves and the gatehouse.

“Surprises?” Davey balked. “Isn’t that what Glinda the Good Witch is for?” He motioned to Rachel as he grinned.

“Pretending to dismiss my expertise as nothing more than movie level parlor tricks won’t hide the fact that you’re attracted to me,” Rachel said without missing a beat.

“Of course I’m attracted to you. I’m always attracted to crazy girls. It’s one of my curses,” Davey said. “I just mean that if you are what you say you are, then we shouldn’t really have to deal with anything unexpected. You know, because you’d be able to see it coming.”

“Are you trying to start a fight with me right now?” Rachel asked, biting her lower lip.

“Shouldn’t you know the answer to that question already?” Davey asked.

“Banter. I love banter. No wonder we end up together,” Rachel said.

“I think I know what that is too,” Davey said. “You’re trying to throw me off my game.”

“I wasn’t aware you had game,” Rachel said.

“Yeah. Me either,” I said instinctively.

“I most certainly do have game, and she’s trying to screw with it,” Davey said, turning his attention to me. “That’s why she’s pulling that whole ‘we get married in the future’ crap. She’s trying to stop me from questioning her. She thinks I’m going to be very cynical.”

“But you’re not,” I reminded my friend. “You’re the one who told me that I needed to keep an open mind.”

“Yes. Well, that was before it affected me directly,” he shot back. “Besides, keeping an open mind doesn’t mean believing everything off the rip. I’m a man of evidence.”

“You are not a man of evidence,” I said.

“Yes, I am a man of evidence!” Davey said loudly. “I always say that.”

“You’ve literally never said that,” I replied.

“The point is, Rachel hasn’t shown me anything that has led me to believe that she has any connection to anything metaphysical. She’s—”

“Piña colada with caramel on top,” Rachel said, interrupting Davey.

“What?” Davey asked, his head jerking in the direction of the woman.

“Usually, my gift comes in the form of the tarot cards,” Rachel said. “They speak to me. They send me signs about what’s to come or what’s already come. Every once in a while, though, they come to me in other ways. When I saw you, it was in the form of a premonition.
