Somewhere In A Memoryâ¦
The neon lights of Paradise glowed against the darkness. Men in suits and women in short dresses were drawn to it from the street, moths to flames.
I stood at Lukeâs side as he helped each of the girls out of his limo. Charon held the door open for them as they climbed out.
âThank you for this,â I told Luke quietly. I wasnât sure that grateful was exactly what I was feeling now, but Luke had gone out of his way to help me. I mightâve been born in Jersey, but I wasnât born in a barn. âYou didnât have to, you know.â
âIt was no problem at all,â Luke said back, just as quietly. It felt like our words were secret somehow, even though they didnât need to be. Only meant for each otherâs ears. âThe least I could doââ
âUnless?â I sensed an unless coming onâand I was right, too.
âUnless youâd like me to come in with you,â Luke offered. He inclined his head slightly, directing his voice at my ear. âIf your manâs stepping out on you in there, perhaps a lesson should be taught.â
âIf he needs a lesson, Iâll teach it to him myself.â I looked to the girls who were clustered a few feet away from Luke and me. They were watching us with wicked interest, even though our conversation was too quiet to reach their ears. âThank you again though. I think weâll be parting ways here.â
âYou know what they say about parting, donât you?â
âThat itâs such sweet sorrow?â
âThe pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again,â Luke countered. He reached into his jacket and pulled out his card, holding it out to me. âDickens.â
âI know who said it.â I shook my head and pushed the card away. Lukeâs arrival into my life had brought the likely destruction of my engagement along with it. Handsome as he was, I didnât think I needed to find out what might be destroyed next. âI donât think we should meet again, Mr. Dawnstar. Keep your card.â
âTake it,â Luke insisted. âBurn it if you need me.â
Reluctantly, I reached for it. âDonât you think calling would be easier?â
âBurn it,â Luke repeated. âItâs all the call Iâll need.â
I didnât see how that was even possible. It was a simple business card with his name written on the front and nothing on the back.
Luke Dawnstar. Adversary Industries, CEO.
It hardly came with a smoke detector attached.
âThanks,â I said, a little more uncertainly this time.
Luke took my hand, raised it to his lips, and kissed it.
It was the kind of kiss that lingered for just a second too long.
âAnything for you.â
Luke climbed back into the limo. His driver closed the door behind him, then slipped behind the wheel.
As the limo pulled away, the girls approached me, all smiling in disbelief.
âWho is he?â Ava asked with a laugh as she watched the rear lights of the limo disappear.
âLuke Dawnstar, CEO of Adversary Industries.â I flashed the card at her. âApparently. Either
