Jax had often wondered whether his constant need to move stemmed from the desire to stay warm that had accompanied him all his life from foster home to foster home. The only place he’d found that warmth was on a stage. At all other times, he craved jumpers, jackets, and thicker socks. But cuddling up to Luca in a tiny cave was just as good and nobody judged him for it or threw insults at him.

Outside of the cave, people had questions and wanted answers. They guessed at his sexuality and wondered about his style of dress and the way he kept his hair. They badgered him about the makeup and accessories he did and didn’t wear and cared nothing for Jax’s discomfort at their choice of queries.

Luca had made one remark about his clothes, and while it had landed flat, he’d soon explained his reasoning. He’d told Jax about his car but hadn’t then asked personal questions of Jax. And he was considerate, and caring, worrying more about Jax’s possessions than Jax did.

For the first time, Jax had found something—someone—he wanted to keep, but he didn’t know how to go about it. He wrote songs about falling in love and falling apart. Could he find words to entice Luca to stay with him? Should he even try when their lives were so different? Was it fair to Luca to put that on him?

As if his thoughts had disturbed Luca, the man shifted, stretched a little and craned his neck to gaze out of the cave’s entrance at the sea. “Will this flood when the tide comes in?”

“Not at this time of year. Besides, the tide is still going out. We have six hours or so before the waves come all the way up here.”

“I’ve asked my guys to help us work out who’s harassing you and what they’re looking for,” Luca said. “It has to be something small, but at the same time it can’t be something that has sentimental value for you. Not if it only turned up a little while ago.”

Jax tensed.

“Jax? What is it?”

“Oh, you’re good.”

“What is it? You thought of something?”

“When you mentioned sentimental, I realised there’s one thing we didn’t check. We haven’t even looked at the fan gifts.”

Outside, the night had lightened to early morning grey. A tendril of mist sneaked into the cave, visible in the dark.

“What the hell are fan gifts?”

“Things my fans send to me.”

“Your fans have your address?”

“Of course not. All mail goes to the label. They sort through it to make sure it contains nothing dangerous and send out signed photographs and stuff. They pack up the gifts, and Connor drops off the boxes. It completely slipped my mind.”

“Where do you keep this stuff?”

“In the basement. And before you ask. Yes, Connor brought fresh boxes since I’ve come home from touring.”

“Well done.” Luca’s brief kiss made Jax feel gooey and warm. “It’s giving us another attack vector.”

Jax was gearing up for a sneaky remark when Luca’s phone rang and Rylan’s deep, rumbling voice let Luca know the police had arrived at the house.
