Let’s Get It On

The first time Kyle came home from work and found Janie waiting at his house, a snack already fixed for him, something in his chest caught. His heart warmed and expanded, just before his taste buds kicked in and he realized how thirsty and happy and lucky he was.

After work each day, she went to the gym, but she was always there when he got off work. That little plate she fixed, waiting for him on the counter every afternoon, gave him a thump and catch whenever he thought of it.

They sat on the back porch, him with a beer, Janie with a glass of wine, munching on nachos, or pepperoni and crackers and cheddar cheese, or whatever snack she’d fixed.

He held her hand while they talked, kissed her some, too. He loved the way Janie made him feel, loved having her there, loved all the little things she did for him. Janie helped make up for all the things that still didn’t feel right in his life.

“That you, babe?” she called as the door slammed behind him. Stepping into the living room, still in her robe, she yanked a clip out of her hair.

“Aw, you showered without me?” Kyle asked, enjoying the flush his words brought to Janie’s cheeks.

He liked to tease her, watch her blush like crazy anytime he said something suggestive. Janie was so shy and demure, he couldn’t help but adore her for it.

“I made you a snack, some guacamole and chips and salsa. You gonna have a beer?” she asked, her smile slow and shy because of her blush.

“Nah, not yet. I’m covered in fiberglass insulation, gotta hit the shower first. I want to take you over to Beeville tonight, have a nice dinner at Lucese’s. How’s that sound?”

“Ooh, that’ll be fun! I can dress real pretty. There’s something right here in the closet I can wear.”

He winked. “You go ahead and dress up. Meet you out on the porch for that beer in a couple, Janie-Jane.”

They were at Lucese’s, dressed up fine, cocktails in hand and dinners ordered, when Janie said, “I found something out, yesterday, Kyle, something really cool. There’s this program up near Dallas. They’re working with dogs, training them for veterans who’ve survived situations like yours. They have visiting hours on Saturdays, noon to three. I thought maybe this weekend we could go up there, check it out.”

Kyle shook his head, not sure he was understanding. “What?”

Janie blushed a little, trying to explain. “There’s this program for vets, Paws for Patriots. They’re training dogs to help soldiers back from Iraq and Afghanistan who have flashbacks at night, and other complications, like you have sometimes.”

“You think I need help?” he asked, feeling a flash of anger.

Janie’s voice was soothing and calm. “You’re doing fine, Kyle. You’re doing real good. I just thought having a dog with you during the day might help sometimes. There are all these statistics about relaxation and lowering heart rate. These are dogs trained special, to help at night and so on.
