Chapter 6

Audra woke in the night, listening in the dark. Had there been a sound? She detected nothing and then the remnants of her dream filled her thoughts. Lucas touching her—kissing her. She’d kissed him back urgently, wanting him.

Her skin felt hot and her nightdress was damp. How long had she been dreaming? The desire to touch Lucas overwhelmed her.

Audra slipped out of the bed, careful not to wake Lilah. She tiptoed out of the bedroom and fetched herself a cup off the shelf. She dipped some water and took a drink, trying to clear her head. She wanted Lucas—wanted the passion he made her feel. She was a church-going woman and she knew it was wrong, but right in this moment, it didn’t seem to matter. She had no plans to surrender authority over herself to a man in marriage—not any time soon. She wouldn’t be ground down like some of the women she’d seen in town. Her parents had a loving partnership, and if she couldn’t have that, she’d have nothing. There was no one to save her chastity for.

Audra fetched her shoes and slipped her feet inside without stockings. She didn’t bother to button them up. She exited the cabin, her white chemise glowing in the moonlight like a wraith. She stepped off the edge of the porch, turned toward the barn, and made her way through the silent darkness.

When she reached the barn door, she paused, spreading her hands on the rough hewn wood and then pulled the door wide enough to enter.

A click froze her in place.

“Audra? Damn, I could have shot you. What are you doing out here?” Lucas’s voice was rough.

“I was dreaming ... about you. About us. I ...” Her courage failed her.

“I’m sorry. You just caught me off guard.” Lucas never lost his alertness, even in sleep.

“I should go.” Audra edged toward the door.

“No, please. Stay.” His hand fumbled for her in the dark and he found her leg. He grasped her ankle and slid his hand to her calf.

Audra softened inside like melting butter. She knelt next to him and reached out. Her fingertips encountered his shoulder, and he pulled her into his embrace as he tumbled onto his back and took her with him. His hands scorched her through the fabric of her nightdress as he touched her, sliding his palms down her back and cupping her rear.

Audra jerked as she felt Lucas’s hands on her. No one but Lucas had ever touched her there and he made her quiver and burn with his kisses.

He nipped her neck and pleasurable zing shot through her. She clutched his shoulders and then tentatively slipped her fingers into the open collar of his shirt. In the darkness, she couldn’t see him—she could only feel the hard contours of his body.

Lucas flipped her underneath him and his hands traveled to her breasts and fondled her gently. Audra’s nipples pebbled, hard and tight, and a deep throbbing began low in her belly.

Lucas pushed up her nightdress, and the fabric of his pants scratched against her tender thighs.
