Chapter Seventeen

When I appear in Flagstaff on Monday morning, Deya is already there. She waves at me from the kitchen, where she and Artemis are talking and laughing. Artemis waves me in. Am I imagining it, or is Deya avoiding my eyes?

“What are you two talking about?” I ask. Artemis grabs a golden apple from the air and tosses it to me. I catch it and sit on a stool across from Artemis, next to Deya.

“We may have stirred up a bit more trouble than we thought with our archery stunt at school,” Deya says, looking at Artemis.

“What do you mean?” I ask, my eyes flying between them. “What happened?”

Artemis answers. “Tony Gunner stopped by.”

“He stopped by? Here?” I cry. “Why? What was so wrong?”

Artemis holds out a hand, as if trying to steady me. “Nothing is wrong. He was just really impressed by your skill. He tried calling, but I forgot to keep that phone with me when I was hunting, so he stopped by.”

“Okay. But why?”

“He wanted to talk to me about your training schedule. Deya swears neither of you talked to him about this. Is that right?” I nod violently. “Well, after your little stunt, Tony has had a change of heart about competitive archery. He’s thinking about training again, and he’d like me to help.” Deya pinches me under the counter. This is going to be easier than we thought! Artemis finding passion for life again, Mr. Gunner getting the inspiration he needs to compete—and win. It’s perfect!

“That’s fantastic!” I practically shout. “Good for Mr. G!”

“And he’d like you two to train with him.”

Um. What?

“He says he hasn’t been as inspired in years as he was watching the pure joy you two obviously have for archery. He wants that back, so he wants to shoot with you.” She smiles archly. “Evidently, times have changed and now it appears that a handsome young teacher and two beautiful girls can’t be alone together. So I’ll have to be there. Every day. Thanks for that.” Her sarcasm is not lost on us.

“Well, thanks, Artemis,” I begin.

“Yeah, yeah,” she interrupts. “Off to school with you.”

We grab our things and go out to Deya’s Jeep. The ride to school is oddly silent until we reach the parking lot and I decide I’ve had enough awkwardness.

“Dey, what’s going on? Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. Why?”

“I’m just worried about you. I haven’t seen you since that stupid conversation at my house, and I want to make sure you’re okay.”

“I’m fine, really. Why wouldn’t I be? Oh, and before I forget, I talked to Thrax yesterday. He’s going to look into Ben’s dad and see if there was an unsanctioned match.”

I hold a hand up to my heart. “Oh, for the love of Zeus, you are my hero! How did you convince him to help?”

She winks at me and steps out of the vehicle. Normally, I would laugh this off, but I can’t. Not with that shadow in her eyes. I jump out and run around the car, grabbing her arm.
