CHAPTER 24
Josieâs heel tapped rhythmically against the floor beneath the chair. She was going to crack the tile at this rate. Steve had filled her in on his conversation with McClaren and she was even more anxious to reach out to her contacts. Her inability to talk to people who might be able to supply information about the men on the list, the camp, or the girl made her as anxious as a caged lionâable to see her prey but unable to reach it. Steve had lectured her again on the danger sheâd put herself, and possibly others, in if she reached out to her sources. It was âthe othersâ that had stopped her from ignoring Steveâs warning. She didnât want anyone else hurt on her account.
Don was in his zone as he researched the camp. Theyâd put the spreadsheet aside. For now, they were focused solely on the camp angle.
Josie could have grabbed the tablet and started her own research but sheâd seen what Don could do. Sheâd be wasting her time. The man was a Picasso on the keyboard. She wished she had those skills when she researched her stories but with her luck, sheâd wind up in jail, doing what he did.
Leaving Don to do his thing, she prowled the house. This place was bigger than Coltâs unit next door but after a while it wasnât big enough. Sheâd headed out to the garden but Steve had stopped her the minute sheâd stepped outside. Too dangerous, heâd claimed, and he didnât have the men to spare as her personal bodyguard.
She was itching to do something productive. Anything. After five minutes of quiet meditation away from prying eyes, she emerged from the bedroom on a mission. She found some cleaning supplies under the kitchen sink and started scrubbing. Don gave her a quick, odd look but returned to his project. The work kept her busy and her nerves began to settle.

Before Troy took his turn on guard, he placed a call to DiSantis armed with the additional information. Once triggered, DiSantisâs memories of that summer had also miraculously returned although neither Scagliotti nor DiSantis claimed to have a particularly clear recollection of one another. Steve didnât believe it since McClaren seemed sure the two of them had roomed together. Troy had talked to both about the disappearance of the girl. Their comments reflected McClarenâs, nothing new was added. But now Rick had a date, time, and incident to investigate through the Monroe County Sheriffâs Office.
Gib returned early that evening with the promised groceries. Josie seemed grateful for a change in projects. Sheâd already cleaned the house from floor to ceiling. The damn place sparkled. Now she attacked the dinner preparation with the same energy. Gib assisted. Steve watched from the doorway as the two zigged and zagged. They got along well. Gib had a way with people. Don, Kevin, and Rick had accepted her, as well. Troy, however, was still out with the jury but heâd kept his opinions to himself and hadnât been offensive toward Josie.
