EVELYN CHARLES WAS, afterwards, quite a changed man. He was more circumspect, but his hatred was also deeper. Kaye saw it in the man's gaze when it landed on him: a brooding, awful, jealous rage. The man held hatred clear through. How could Rotherham not see it? How could he see any good in this wretched, beautiful, wicked man?

But Paul had always thought Sandy handsome, and he'd been wrong about that, too. Perhaps he was inclined to see good attributes where he loved, even unwisely. It hurt to think of Rotherham loving that man, just deep-down hurt in a way he could not reason himself out of or change. He tried not to think about it, told himself it was complicated and none of his business and that Evelyn certainly hadn't stolen Paul from him because he didn't want him that way, never had.

Of course not. And if his heart ached a little and he felt a savage jealousy and a hurt longing he didn't dare admit even to himself, well, that was an entirely other matter, wasn't it?

Rotherham and Kaye were forced to slow down, for the man was an indifferent rider.

Rotherham had patience for this, but Kaye hadn't. He soon began to excuse himself when Evelyn appeared, though he knew it didn't please Rotherham. He had no wish to martyr himself or be part of a love triangle (in Evelyn's mind at least). He would bloody well rather ride alone than with that man, even if it pleased Evelyn to have it so. Sander saw no need to make himself miserable. Let them do that to each other if they wished; he wanted no part in it.

He was, however, pleased to see a noticeable cooling between Rotherham and Mr. Charles. Moody silences at the breakfast table, flouncing on Charles's part, and less time spent riding together. Sander told himself (virtuously) that it could have nothing at all to do with him because he had removed himself from between them on rides, etc. Occasionally he even breakfasted earlier so he could miss the dramatics.

He kept himself busy with the papers and his private walks, acquainted himself with Rotherham's stable, and enjoyed the company of the horses. He had the feeling sometimes that Rotherham wished for more time with him, but without any specific request he was able to stay aloof. In truth it had grown difficult for him, with
