Chapter Six

Travis fidgeted. He’d deliberately distanced himself today. Stella needed to get to know his breed partner. Travis needed to know if they would get on. If he could look forward to a true mating, or if he had to think of something else. He wouldn’t give her up, not now he’d had her. He wanted her under his roof, in his bed. Bearing his children.

He didn’t allow his expression to change as an agent briefly outlined the outcome of a recent case. “You can count the Silver Diamond casino in Las Vegas as fans,” the man finished dryly, snapping shut the slim orange folder before him. “Without your vigilance, we’d have lost millions.”

Travis stood, not revealing his relief. That assignment had been a close-run thing, and it wasn’t over yet. But they’d unearthed the scammers inside the company, which would help the owners protect their investments.

Their newest client invited him to dinner, and when he declined, said, “I have to get back tonight. My breedmate is growing anxious.”

“You can contact your breedmate at this distance?” Usually only ten miles was possible, even between breedmates.

His client’s smile grew. “I use the phone. I’ll order the plane. Thanks for the help. I’ll be in touch.”

When he’d gone, Travis slumped back in his chair and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Are we done?”

Even as he spoke, his intercom buzzed and his PA’s voice started to speak. As he did, the mahogany door burst open, admitting a man he knew well. As well as any man could know his brother.

Orlando Sleekheart had taken the honor of senator reluctantly, and only after a great deal of persuasion. Eventually Travis had pointed out, “Someone has to do it. Better you than me,” and Orlando had finally given in. He had a big and enthusiastic majority, and he was the first shape-shifter to be elected by a mixed constituency. More humans than shape-shifters resided in the part of Pennsylvania that he represented, and he did his best to work hard for both communities. Now more shape-shifters had joined him. Some were already there, posing as human. They’d come out, too, but so far they were scattered over Congress, most of them independents.

Orlando didn’t look like a senator today. Anger flashed in his eyes, he’d pulled his tie half undone, and his hair was anything but neat. He’d tunneled his fingers through it repeatedly, if Travis was any judge. He indicated the chair their client had just vacated with a jerk of his chin. “Good to see you,” he said, more out of politeness than truth.

With a heavy sigh, Orlando reached for the coffee jug. They hadn’t left much, but he seemed grateful for the stuff he eked out, which was the consistency of molasses. He glanced around. “No recordings, nobody says anything outside this room until I’m more sure.”

Travis sat up and paid him more attention. Orlando was often angry about something, so he never paid it much mind, but something in particular had riled him up today.
