MICHAEL CISCO is the author of four published novels: The Divinity Student, The Tyrant, The San Veneficio Canon, and The Traitor, as well as a collection of stories entitled Secret Hours. His short fiction has appeared in The Book of Eibon, The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric and Discredited Diseases, Leviathan III, Leviathan IV, Album Zutique, Phantom, and Dark Wings. Cisco says: Lovecraft’s works have consistently provided me with fresh food for thought. Far from reducing his work to a sort of solipsistical monologue with himself, his pointed devotion to his own idiosyncrasies opens his stories and poems outward onto a wider domain of thinking. I wrote this piece to try out a variation on his theme of a lurking power or divinity, and used my own general sensibilities and philosophical outlook in the couching of the story in the same way that Lovecraft used his own.
