CLEANING UP

There’s one other matter before you can tick this studio update job off as done. I’m talking about regular cleaning of your space and tool maintenance. Cleaning and maintenance are basic habits to learn and practice so that your space will stay organized and attractive from now on.

Think of cleaning and maintenance in three timeframes: daily, weekly, and annually. Daily cleaning involves small chores you can tackle in less than fifteen minutes. Thirty minutes should cover your weekly chores, while an annual review might involve an hour or two, depending on your space and number of tools.

Many suggest cleaning first before diving into your work; I prefer to clean at the end of the day. For me, it’s frustrating to walk into my studio ready to play, only to see a mess that must be cleared up before I can start. If you spend a few minutes at the end of each day doing a quick clean, you will be amazed at the results. Not only do you avoid the tendency to “just sit things here for a bit,” which often turns into a few months, but cleaning before you turn off the lights means you start fresh each day and can get right to work.

Daily and Weekly Cleaning

Daily cleaning involves returning supplies to their designated containers, and tools back to their homes, clearing off the work surfaces, and picking (or sweeping) bits of this or that off the floor that didn’t make it into the trash can. If you are knee-deep in a project, this doesn’t mean clearing everything away, only to pull it out again the next day. It’s about corralling or putting away the work elements you are finished using for that project.

A thorough sweep, vacuum, and/or dusting of the entire space on a weekly basis will keep things fresh and orderly, especially if fur friends hang out with you. To cut down on time spent vacuuming and sweeping, place small trash cans near each work station to keep floors cleaner. Also consider small hanging trash containers that you make or purchase.
