Chapter Ten

Sean

Scarlet and I returned home from our vacation in Greece, and she seemed to be in a better mood now that she had some time away from the reality she faced. Spending everyday cruising through the Mediterranean, drinking and eating, and making love seemed to take her stress away.

I just hoped it would stay that way.

I carried the bags inside and set them by the door. “I still feel like I’m on a ship.” My legs felt a little wobbly.

Scarlet didn’t seem to be affected at all. She walked inside with just her purse over her shoulder. “Maybe we need to get a better captain.” She gave me a teasing look.

“I’m a fine captain,” I said. “I got you there and back safe and sound.”

“I don’t know…you rocked my boat a few times.” A slight smile was on her lips.

“Well, of course. I had to do that.” I stood behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist. “We can always go back whenever you want.”

“You have a job, Sean.”

“I won’t have one for long,” I said. “The kiddos will be ready soon. Then we can move there if you want.”

“I couldn’t be away from my family like that,” she said immediately. “Although, it is a nice place to visit.”

I pressed a kiss to her shoulder. “What now?”

She released a deep sigh. “We should tell the kids…”

The sadness in her voice hurt me. “You still want to sell the house?”

She stared at the place where she killed a man by shooting him in the head. “I think so.”

“You’ll be okay telling them why?” I knew that would be hard for her. She always protected everyone around her from the painful truth, especially our children.

“I’ll have to be.” She moved away from my embrace, which I hated.

I grabbed her and pulled her back to me. “Don’t be distant with me.”

“I’m not,” she said immediately. “I’m never distant with you.”

I searched her eyes for sincerity.

“I think everything will be better when we put this behind us. Until then, things will never be the same.”

“Except you and I. That will always be the same.”

A slight smile stretched her lips. “Forever and always.”

I stared at my wife, noting the color in her cheeks from the Mediterranean sun. She was the strongest person I’d ever known. No one had ever been through so much and managed to plaster a smile on their face. Scarlet was more resilient than the deadliest bacteria.

The front door opened, and we both turned at the sound.

“Good,” Ryan said as he shut the door behind him. “You’re home.” He immediately went to Scarlet and hugged her tightly. Ryan always acted like Scarlet was a pain in his backside but it was obvious two weeks was too long to be apart from her. ‘Had a good trip?”

“It was amazing,” Scarlet said as she pulled away. “We cruised on a yacht for two weeks.”

Ryan whistled. “That’s some fancy shit.”

She chuckled. “Sean always treats me like a queen.”

“You are my queen,” I said.

Ryan turned to me like he finally noticed me.
