It was past nine. Several cars had already pulled over beside Julietâs house where loud music and laughter were escaping from the wide opened windows. Joe didnât like it, not a bit.
After saying good night to Wendy, he decided to give it one last try to keep Elena at home. âYou really wanna go? Look how noisy these people are! They must be drinking alcohol! And ... and the music is so lousyââ
âYou are as nagging as my parents now,â smirked Elena who was in her casual T-shirt and jeans. She didnât wear any makeup, but still looked pretty. âDonât worry. Itâs just next door. Nothing bad will happen.â Her tone softened. âI wonât touch any alcohol. I will just have a little fun and come back before 11.â
âToo late! Before 10!â negotiated Joe.
â10 thirty!â Elena lifted her chin in mock-defiance.
âPromise?â Joe looked sideways at her, allowing half a smile to steal across his face.
âPromise!â Elena turned to the door and walked out.
It was almost 10 thirty. Joe watched the doorway and the windows of Julietâs house frequently, but he didnât see his niece at all. He did see people rocking to the disco music inside and some stagger out to smoke. It was not a party suitable for a teenage girl for sure.
When two bottles were thrown out of a window accompanied by shrieking laughter, he couldnât hold back anymore. He rushed into Julietâs door in a frenzy and searched for Elena in the sitting room. It was not as crowded as heâd thoughtâat most 10 people in total, most half drunk. A few were dancing clumsily. The rest were lounging in the sofa.
âJoe?â Juliet approached him. She didnât seem drunk, nor surprised. âLooking for Elena?â
âYeah, whereâs she?â
âJoe, go home.â Juliet looked at him intently, her blue eyes glittering with either remorse or determination, or both. âI will take care of her and send her home. I promise! I promise everything will be OK as long as you donâtââ
âWhere is she?â Joe raised his voice. Julietâs strange words made his blood run cold.
Juliet hesitated for a second, then sighed and pointed a finger in the direction of her bedroom. When Joe brushed past her, she looked almost sad.
Joe pushed the door open without effort. It was not locked. But the moment his eyes met his niece, he promptly shut the door close. She was standing against the nightstand facing Nathan who was sitting in the bed. Her hips were swaying rhythmically from side to side; her hands were pulling her T-shirt slowly upward; and her small waist was in full exhibition, followed with the under cup of her bra ...
âStop!â Joe reached her and pulled her T-shirt down in one quick move. âElena, whatâre you doing? You are drunk?â
âNo, y-you stop!â Elena stammered while struggling to get away from her uncle. âYou ... you go away ... IâIâm having fun with ... with Nate.â She began to hit Joe in the chest when he didnât let go of her.
âElena, letâs go home.
