Sudden stagger-up voices

– God, at this hour? – propped

against each other in rough harmony.

It’s not the local school,

no sign that they’re a good cause

or in any sense good news,

stumbling out of the unsilent night

– is that the time

of year already? – an unholy din

that kicks its clod boots

on your doorstep, thick with byre-

muck and mud

from nowhere within centuries of here.
