CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

CALLUM

I watch Abby walk safely through her front door before reversing out of her driveway. She’s infiltrated all of my carefully assembled defence mechanisms, and I invited her to do so, willingly.

I drive to Carton House consumed only with thoughts of her. The last twenty-four hours were eventful. I wouldn’t change a second of it, apart from her dickhead ex phoning into the station. But perhaps if he hadn’t called, she mightn’t have confided in me about her past. And neither would I.

The outside temperatures are cooler than yesterday, but intermittent blue skies make for pleasant training conditions. The lads are on the track, already warming up with some laps.

‘If it isn’t Ireland’s one and only agony uncle,’ Marcus bellows loudly, and the others offer a mock round of applause.

I’d completely forgotten about the show, consumed only with thoughts of all that occurred afterwards. I’m about to get slaughtered, but it was worth every second.

‘Testing out my radio voice in case this fucking cruciate goes again,’ I joke, but the truth of the situation occurs to me as the words escape my mouth.

‘You’ve got it bad, man,’ James says in a knowing tone. He approaches me from behind as I pull my kit out of my bag. ‘Remind us how it went again… When you find the right one, you’ll bring her to meet your teammates…’

‘You nailed her, bro, didn’t you? No woman could have resisted that,’ Eddie says, frothing at the mouth, like a stray dog begging for the scraps. ‘She is one serious piece of ass. I’m dying to hear how that went.’

‘You will die before you get any details from me,’ I warn him with a not so light thump on the arm. Abby’s mine. I will not be sharing any private info with him or anyone else today, or any other day.

‘He’s got it bad,’ James repeats, confirming what I already know. ‘Marcus, I think your Audi is gone for good.’

‘I couldn’t give a fuck about your Audi, Marcus. In fact, I want you to keep it. Abby means so much more than a stupid bet. I think I’ve proved enough at this stage, don’t you?’ I tell him in all seriousness. ‘You guys were right,’ I admit, as I remove my hoody. ‘I think I’ve finally found the perfect combination of ingredients.’ I grin sheepishly as the words tumble out.

‘Fucking hell, we never thought we’d see the day.’ Marcus’s shoulders visibly relax in open relief, no longer concerned about parting with his precious Q7. His family orientated streak also approves of my new relationship status. In his eyes, having a good woman made you more of a man. He might be right. Abby seems to bring out the best in me. She brings out the caveman in me. I want to protect her, cherish her and make sure nobody else gets near her. I want her all for myself.

‘It’s early days, but if last night’s anything to go by, its fucking promising,’ I admit.
