Chapter Fourteen

For the last two days, I’ve been on cloud nine. Since my dinner with Luc, to be precise. The only negative comment I can utter about the evening is that it ended much too soon. I didn’t make a blunder, or at least if I did, Luc didn’t react. And my greatest achievement is that when I left, I could see he was genuinely happy. Not to see me leave. To have spent some time with me.

I even had a surprise yesterday: a text message from him. He wrote me to warn me he would call me so as not to stress me—I had told him about the way I react to phone calls—but if I wanted to, I could call him at 6:00 p.m. He added that he had really enjoyed our evening together.

Reading the text again, I wonder if he wasn’t colluding with my psychologist. He didn’t write that I could call him after six, which could have left me the possibility of procrastinating or even postponing the call to another day, but at six. And although he wrote that I could call him if I want to, I feel like I have to. That being said, even if I dread the ordeal of a new phone call, I’m eager to hear his voice.

I do have, though, to wait for four more hours and twenty-five minutes. I will spend them working on a file my boss deposited in my box this morning, a new client who could grant us access to his international branches. The case is complex and very important for the future of the company. My boss will supervise it himself.

I give all I have not to make the tiniest mistake. But the trainee keeps interrupting me. I had to teach him after another of his intrusions that he has to send me an email before coming to see me. He got it, but I nonetheless have had to spend the whole afternoon working with him on parts of a project that didn’t fall under my jurisdiction.

A mail arrived, announcing that my boss wanted to come and see me, and, precisely five minutes later, he knocked on my door.

“Hervé, I have a request for you.”

I wait for him to tell me more, bracing myself for the worst possibility: having to tell him that working on yet another project would be impossible if he doesn’t want me to hand in the other ones late.

“I had a discussion with François this morning. He told me several times how much you helped him. I would like you to be his placement mentor. Officially.”

Why, oh why didn’t he settle for handing me one or two other projects, or telling me I had to finish this one by tonight?

“I’ll let you think about it. You’re not obliged to accept, but François really did appreciate working with you, and it appears you are the one who offers him the most experience.”

He stands and walks to the door. Before closing it, he turns around and drops another bombshell.
