Chapter Eighteen
A lesson in what not to be.
David spent the next two hours at the piano. Itâd taken him fifteen minutes to get used to the feel of it and then fight off the deluge of memories it brought back. But then the brick wall heâd been facing started coming apart, and he began making progress on the promised songs.
Josh came in at some point and sat on a chair nearby. He didnât say anything but sat and listened with open appreciation. When David asked him for some paper to write a few notes on, he willingly obliged and returned with not only paper but a pen, too. David thanked him and resumed working while Josh returned to his chair.
When his grumbling stomach started drowning out the music, David stopped playing and stood to stretch. He looked at his watch, surprised to see it was after noon. Having only eaten half a bagel for breakfast, he was more than ready for pizza. He looked at Josh, whoâd gotten up from his seat as well.
âYou about ready to eat?â
Jenna answered for him as she came down the stairs. âHeâs always ready to eat.â She reached the bottom of the stairs and came to stand near them.
âAre you coming with us?â David asked.
âI was going to meet my friends there today, anyway. I might as well get a ride.â She avoided looking at David while she busied herself with the tiny purse hanging from her shoulder.
He looked at Josh, who shrugged and headed for the door. David went out after him, and Jenna followed shortly behind.
At the car, they all stopped and looked at the two seats. âI guess youâll have to squeeze in.â
With a roll of her eyes, Jenna went around to get in the car, then stopped and looked at David. Instead of climbing in, she held the door open for her brother, allowing him to deal with the stick shift and their father. Josh got in and moved over as far as he could, then she got in and slammed the door closed.
David sat in the driver's seat, started the engine, and nudged the shifter into gear, trying not to inconvenience Josh too much.
As they pulled out, Josh shook his head. âI canât believe Nate did that to your car.â
David sighed. âItâs pretty painful to look at.â
âYeah.â
âDo you really think he did it on purpose?â Jenna asked while staring out the window.
Without Layla there to reprimand him, David didnât try to hide his contempt for Nate. âI know he did it on purpose.â
She looked around Josh at him. âWhy would he?â
âBecause heâs a jerk. He hates me.â He glanced at her. âHeâs always hated me.â
She resumed looking at the passing scenery. âSeems pretty immature if you ask me.â
âI couldnât agree more. I guess I shouldâve invited him to my tenth birthday party.â
âWhat?â
âThatâs when it all started. I donât know how it works now, but back then, when you had a birthday, you invited the whole class.â
Josh grinned. âYou invited everyone but him?â
David nodded.
