Chapter 20
The Boomerang
My love story started back in 1986 at Jack London High School in Missouri. It was the fall of my junior year when I had a class with Paul. There was an instant attraction on my part—in fact, I acted like I was in the first grade. I knew his friend Greg, so I had him give Paul a note I’d written. Needless to say, we fell in love, and I truly believed that we had a future. But he broke my heart in the fall of 1987 when he notified me, “I just don’t think I love you anymore.”
I was devastated, but I slowly came back to life and graduated from London High. After a few years at technical college, I decided that I had to move on with my life and start again on the emotional front. Around that time, I met someone and married him, and we went on to have three children who are my life. But I slowly started noticing the signs that I wasn’t in a healthy relationship—for example, my husband was a very controlling man who soon became both emotionally and physically abusive.
I thought, If I could only change something in myself, then maybe that would make him happy. But nothing made him happy—nothing. During the bleakest times when I was in serious pain, I’d let my mind wander back to my handsome football hero, Paul. At least my husband could never take those memories away from me.
Even though I never talked about Paul, which would have proved dangerous in my house, I did run into his family from time to time, and they told me that he was doing well. That made me happy, since at least one of us deserved as much.
