Marita, Hainich Forest, Jungle
Marita leaned against the moss covered stem of the broken down oak tree. Hidden deep in the jungle heart of the Hainich forest, no hiker could see, or even hear them by accident. Even if they shouted at each other, like they did now.
She listened to Lisa, Tobias, and Achim arguing over what Lisa had observed when she went to fetch Marita.
âShe gave us away to this forester. A human!â, shouted Lisa.
âWell. We need his approvalâ, shouted Achim back.
âWe donât. He would never find us. Besides, she hadnât had to reveal the shifting aspectâ, argued Tobias.
Tobias and Lisa were angry. They thought her incapable of being a leader to them. Though neither of them wanted to fight her for the leadership.
âYou think, telling the forester she owns a pack is a better idea?â, asked Achim with a low voice. âIâd call the police instantly being the forester given such an information.â
âThatâs the problem with you. Youâre breaking the rules yourself!â, spat Tobias.
Achim was on her side.
Martia knew it.
He might not like what she did, but he was in love with a human himself, lost his task of quarding their castle ruin, their origin, their roots, back in the Schönbuch forest. He, at least, might understand her love for the human man.
âI donât see any police around. And weâre allowed to stayâ, said Achim. âWhereâs your problem Lisa? Whereâs yours Tobias?â
When none answered, Marita looked over the rest of her group. They sat at the border of the small clearance and watched. None interrupted the battle going on. All felt uneasy, and she could smell it, see it in their posture.
Achim didnât stress her finding her mate with Raffael. Marita was thankful for this. But she felt she had to take over the argument. After all, she was in charge, not Achim.
She checked the clearance. She still wanted to build the main cabin here. Far away from every path, out of each eye, except maybe the foresters, if he ever came her. Which she doubted, because there were no game trails leading to the clearance. Only the trails she and her pack had left the night before.
Which was something else that bothered her. There were little game in the forest, mostly smaller ones like rabbits, mice, some larger birds. But no deer or boar, at least no trail she smelled so far. They would need at least one base in a village around to buy food in one of the stores. Or raise it themselves.
A grin spread over her face, making her cheeks go round and her eyes wide at the thought of having a sheep flock and cows for her pack on their own farm.
âWhatâs that funny?â, hissed Lisa, turning towards Marita.
The fight obviously came to a draw between the three. A win for Achim, in Maritaâs sight, for the two of them couldnât talk over him.
She felt tired with the fight. Was that how Wolfram had felt when he had let her leave the pack only
