Tips for practicing love in

your neighborhood

Make it a practice to smile and wave at every neighbor you see.

When you see someone moving into your neighborhood, make a point to meet them and introduce yourself.

Watch for neighbors who are older, have health challenges, or live alone, and find a way to be especially kind to them.

Love Challenge

Speak to at least one neighbor within the coming week.

LOVE IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.

—Martin Luther King, Jr., Strength To Love

There are many ways to show love in your community. You begin by simply looking for ways to help others. You can put your wisdom to work by serving on the board of a nonprofit, social services organization that is doing good for others. You can change a person’s life by volunteering to teach them how to read, or by volunteering to teach something else that you know how to do or that you have an affinity for. You can bake a birthday cake for a child who might not otherwise get one. You can mentor a young person, coach a team, babysit kids, or organize after-school activities for tweens and teens. You can donate a coat you rarely wear to someone who desperately needs one. Or better yet, you can organize a clothing, coats, or shoe drive for people who need those things.

The social services organizations in your area may be looking for someone with your skills, talents, and abilities to help them make a difference in the lives of the people they serve. Look around your community for an organization that provides a service that is meaningful to you, like one that helps abused children, military veterans, the elderly, the developmentally delayed, or abandoned pets. There may also be multiple ways to put your love into action by serving at a nearby house of faith, hospital, or an elder care facility. If you can’t find an organization that is already doing what you believe needs to be done, consider starting a group or organization to meet the needs that you identify in your community.

One way to show love in your community is to do your “no big deal” through the Love Is Action Community Initiative (LIACI). LIACI is a platform on which stakeholders in the community can set aside their differences and come together to help one another. Both public and private social service providers and other nonprofit organizations, houses of worship, businesses, politicians, civic groups, and concerned citizens come together to address the needs of those most vulnerable in their community.

We all know that the problems that our neighbors face cannot all be eliminated or assuaged by a government program or a winning lottery ticket. Those types of things are band-aids that never entirely solve the problems that cause the pain of the people in our neighborhoods. Every community has people who are dealing with challenges, including depression, despair, unemployment, poverty, homelessness, addiction, domestic violence, child abuse, human trafficking, and other criminal behavior.
