Nicole watched Jack withdraw into himself. If only there was some way she could help him or reassure him. She knew he was worried about his niece. A case like this could really get to you. Especially if you were a parent or were raising a child. At times like these, being away from Chloe had to really prey on his mind. Did he feel guilty? Knowing Jack as she did, he probably did.
Casting a discreet glance his way, she was pretty sure she was correct. He looked as though he was mentally castigating himself right now. He always had taken a lot upon himself. Blaming himself for things that he had no control over.
She reached out and touched his hand. The jolt that tingled up her arm tempted her to draw back. But Nicole Dawson was no coward, so she left her hand where it was. âHey. You hanging in there?â
He flashed her a brief grin. âYeah, Iâm good. You donât need to worry about me.â
She did, though. There might not be a place for him in her life, but that didnât mean sheâd successfully shut him all the way out of her heart. Deep down inside, Jack would always matter to her. She recognized that now. The way they were able to understand each other and communicate with just their eyes showed her the truth of this.
Right now, Jack was suffering.
âYou know, Jack, I am glad youâre here. Your being here might be the one thing that will help us find Leah before itâs too late.â
His brow furrowed. âHow do you figure that? Youâre the one who knows the child.â
She nodded. âTrue. But this whole operation is bigger than our department would be able to handle. So, thank you.â
He shrugged, his cheeks glowing. âIâm just listening to my boss. She told me I needed to be here, so here I am.â
And that was the other thing to remember about Jack. He really didnât like compliments. She laughed softly. âWhatever you say.â
Her voice said she didnât believe him. But she left it there. It was late by the time they returned to the station. Nicole yawned as she gathered her belongings and prepared to head home for the night. She hesitated for a moment.
âNicole, are you sure youâre okay going back to your apartment by yourself? That guy is still out there.â Jack leaned his hip against the side of her desk and waited for her to answer.
His comment was so aligned with what she was thinking that she immediately denied it. âNah, Iâm good. I live in a building with security. Relax.â
âI donât like it. I would prefer if I slept on your couch tonight. I donât think I could relax knowing youâre alone.â She raised her brows at him. âSeriously. If we find ourselves unable to sleep, we can compare notes and get a jump on the case. Be ready for tomorrow.â
âYeah, somehow, I donât see that happening.â
He chuckled and pushed his chair back. She stood, too.
