So stay. Two simple words that meant more to her than he could possibly know. After her lonely childhood, it still surprised her when other people wanted her around. But his final words had really twirled batons and streamers over her heart. I like hearing about your life.

Did anyone like hearing about her life?

Had anyone ever asked?

Not even Cody had been all that interested in it, if she were being honest.

Jet stood and carried his plate to the kitchen sink. “Do you have a bottle? I’ll warm it up.”

“Actually, I do.” She didn’t go anywhere without a stocked diaper bag. “I’ll change her into pajamas while you warm the bottle.”

In seconds she’d unearthed the purple-striped pajamas with flying cows printed all over them. Silly things. How she’d miss these baby clothes when Clara outgrew them.

“You can change her on my bed if you’d like.” His fingers brushed hers, making her breath catch, as he took the bottle. “Down the hall to the left.”

She nodded her thanks, carrying Clara and the diaper bag to his room. It consisted of a large bed neatly made with a navy blue comforter, two dressers and a television. Everything was orderly. Making quick time of it, she changed Clara’s diaper and got her into the pajamas. When she returned, Jet had taken a seat in the leather chair near the fireplace, so she sat on the couch across from him. She wrapped Clara in a baby blanket and gave her the bottle.

“When did Morgan move to Ogden?” Jet sank back in the chair, propping one ankle on the opposite knee. His relaxed pose was so striking, Holly’s mouth went dry. She forgot he expected a response.

“Oh, um, recently.” She looked down at the baby, her lids already drooping.

He frowned. “You said she has a child, too, right? Drake? How old is he?”

“Yes. He just turned two. He’s a cutie. A whirlwind of energy, but he sure is adorable.” She’d learned about infants from spending time with Morgan and him.

“If you move to Utah, how can you be sure Morgan will stay?” He didn’t sound judgmental, but she tensed. She didn’t know. And until now, she hadn’t allowed herself to think about it.

“She’s really happy there. I talked to her yesterday. She’s got a good job and an apartment near shops and restaurants.”

He opened his mouth to say something, but she didn’t want to discuss Morgan anymore tonight. “How is the whole ‘splitting the ranch with Blaine’ thing going?”

“Uh, good.” He drummed his fingers on the arm of the chair. “Actually, it’s not.”

“Going good?”

“Going at all.”

“You’re not splitting the ranch?”

“We are. It’s just...stalled.”

“Oh.” She watched the firelight dance on his face.

“It’s been busy.” He wiped his hand over his mouth. And met her eyes again.

“I’m sure.”

“And I don’t know if Blaine is ready.”

“Huh.” She’d watched Blaine over the past weeks. He was more laid-back than the rest of the bunch, but he got things done. “He seems reliable.”

“He is,” he said quickly. “Blaine’s the best guy I know.
