CHAPTER TEN

Not long after disconnecting with Keely, Ethan’s phone buzzed again. His gut rolled at the familiar name and number blinking across the screen. He hadn’t spoken to Tracy’s mother in months, and only three times since the funeral.

Between their last conversation and now, he’d spent more time thinking about his lovely neighbor than the woman he’d vowed to cherish all his life. He felt like a coldhearted jerk.

Nevertheless, he let the call go to voice mail and shoved his past in the dark recesses of his mind. He spent the rest of the afternoon seeing patients. Though he had no idea why, several of them thanked him for his service before he redirected the conversation back to them.

Curiosity had him stopping Connor in the hallway. “What’s with all the outpouring of public gratitude for my service?”

Connor’s eyebrows shot up. “You’re really getting outpourings of gratitude?”

Ethan nodded.

“Then let me add my thanks to the mix, because, dude, when you step up, you step up. Man to man, what made you do it?”

Ethan had no idea what Connor was talking about. “Define...it.”

“Word around town is that you’re officially working on the Christmas parade.”

“It’s true, I am...now, wait just a minute. How do you know this? I’ve only attended two meetings.” As soon as he said the words, he remembered this was Village Green. Gossip traveled faster than the speed of light.

“Village Green’s Facebook page is a plethora of information.” Connor said this with absolutely no sarcasm in his voice.

It was all in his eyes.

“Village Green has a Facebook page? Why?”

“I would think it’s self-explanatory,” Connor said, chuckling. “You should check it out sometime. There are even pictures from a parade meeting. One in particular has the town talking, for good reason.”

Ethan stared at his partner, partly baffled, partly horrified the Village Green’s grapevine had gone digital. And there were pictures. He shuddered. “I’ll pass, thanks.”

“If it was anyone else, I’d say our newly elected mayor engaged in a fair amount of arm-twisting.” Connor shook his head, obviously baffled. “So, tell me, what happened?”

“Wrong place, wrong time.”

“I’m thinking there’s more to the story, and your lovely neighbor is at the heart of it.”

When it came to him and Keely, there was always more to the story. Ethan had been denying the truth of that for months, avoiding her in an attempt to keep her out of his head, and possibly even his heart.

“Well, however it came about, I’m glad you’re getting reconnected in the community. It’s been a long time coming.” Connor clasped his shoulder. “Welcome back to the living.”

Ethan flinched. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“You know exactly what it means. Take it from someone who knows, you’ve been among the walking dead long enough.”

Ethan bristled. “It’s called mourning. I lost the love of my life.” He clenched his teeth. “It’s only right to honor her memory.”

“By not living your life? By holing yourself up in your house every night, going out only when it’s required? That’s not honoring her memory, it’s living in fear.
