CHAPTER FIVE

Amanda

I know asking him to drop me back with my sisters is the sensible thing to do, but when he mentions going back to his place, my heart starts doing backflips like it’s on the Olympic gym team. I just can’t say no. Being in his arms has filled me with a warm sense of comfort and I want to stay with him.

When he’d suggested picking me up, I thought the morning couldn’t possibly get any worse. I had terrible images of him putting his back out and collapsing under my weight and would rather have crawled along like a worm dragging my injured leg behind me than suffer that embarrassment.

But then he picked me up in his powerful arms and held me close, and it wasn’t humiliating at all. It was wonderful.

I’m fiercely independent but I have to admit, I felt like I was in a fairytale and I loved the feeling of protectiveness.

He settles me gently into his car and I sit with my leg outstretched across the backseat as he drives further into the mountains.

The car feels charged with electricity and there’s no denying there’s something between us. A palpable intensity that makes my heart race with excitement.

“Holy shit. Is this where you live?” I ask, my mouth dropping open as he pulls into the drive of an enormous cabin.

It’s the perfect mix of modern and traditional and looks like it should be on a home design TV show. It’s split across two levels with a stone base, wooden beams, and huge glass windows that stretch from floor to ceiling. The view over the mountains must be sensational.

“Yeah, my construction company built it,” he says proudly, and it all clicks into place.

“Wow, your website says you guys are the best in State, but I thought that was just marketing bullshit,” I say, accidentally blurting out more than I mean to.

“It is bullshit because we’re really the best in the country,” he says with a wink.

“And you live here alone?” I ask, suddenly panicking that in a few seconds, his drop-dead gorgeous wife is going to come out wearing sexy underwear with a freshly baked pie.

I bet she’s an amazing cook and always does the housework in a thong and stilettos. I bet she’s really funny and clever and nice too. Bitch!

“Yeah, it’s just me,” he says, and I immediately feel like a lunatic for having such irrationally jealous thoughts about his make-believe, super-sexy wife.

He helps me out of the car, lifting me into his arms again and carrying me carefully like I’m some priceless work of art that mustn’t be damaged.

I can’t help but feel like I’m his bride and he’s carrying me over the threshold and I start to hum the wedding march in my head.

“What are you humming?” he asks. Shit. Totally not in my head!

“Just a Barbra Streisand song,” I lie, wondering what the hell made me say that, but thankful I didn’t get far enough into the song for him to think I’m full-on crazy.
