Chapter Nine

Present Day

Marion made her way through the crowd following the usher to her table. She’d finished recording her part for Petunia’s Potion a few days before, and while they might still need her input as a producer, her day-to-day involvement was over, and she was currently enjoying her time off between projects. A week or two from now, she’d be itching for something to do, but for now, the time off was welcome. It allowed her to do things like this, attend Julia’s annual fundraiser for the Resolve Foundation. She was picky about the events she attended, normally preferring to just write a check and be done with it, but Julia was one of her oldest friends, and she got a personal invitation every year, so she made it a point to attend. It was going to be dreadfully dull, they would make some speeches, give out some awards, a few of the kids would say something, and then there would be dancing. She was sure some of the younger attendees would find their way to whichever gay club happened to have the most hype at the moment, but she wouldn’t be joining them.

Marion took her seat at the table and watched as the ballroom filled up, the seats around her quickly becoming occupied. The lights dimmed slightly as the first speaker appeared on the stage that ran the length of the front of the ballroom. As soon as she started speaking, introducing Julia, Marion tuned her out. The seat immediately to her left was still empty, one of the few in the room, but plans changed at the last minute and Marion didn’t think anything of it.

Ten minutes into the speeches, Marion caught sight of movement from the corner of her eye. She turned to see what had disturbed her and immediately closed her eyes against the sight. Jess. Her stomach swooped, though she couldn’t tell if it was in dread or excitement. Their eyes caught and held. Laughter burst through the room, startling both of them into movement. Marion looked away as Jess pulled out the seat next to her and sat down. The ceremonies continued. Marion tried to pay attention. When that didn’t work, she tried to zone out. No matter what she did, she could swear she felt Jess’s body heat radiating off of her. She shifted in her seat trying to put some distance between them, but there was nowhere for her to go. She hoped that the speeches wouldn’t last for too much longer. She wanted to find Julia, make her excuses, and leave. At the same time, she wanted to stay, wanted to know what would happen with Jess now that they seemed to be getting along. What did that moment in the studio mean? That moment when Jess
