HAZEL COULD HEAR JAMIE saying goodnight to Emma in a room upstairs. She got to her feet, wandering around his living room, and anxiously darted a look towards the door. I ought to have left already! She thought, surreptitiously glancing at her watch. She'd never intended on spending the evening with Jamie and his daughter, and especially not planned on staying so late.

She pulled her car keys out of her pocket and wondered whether she ought to just leave, but the sound of footsteps on the stairs made her pause.

“Sorry,” Jamie said, returning to the living room. He shot her a smile. “I'm trying to keep her routines as much the same as possible. That means set bedtimes.”

“Of course.” Hazel nodded. “I ought to be going anyway. Honestly, I never meant to outstay my welcome. I'm sorry -”

“You haven't!” Jamie said. “In fact, I was sort of hoping I could get you to stay another half hour, so we can run back over our plan of action for tomorrow.”

Our plan of action. Hazel blushed pink at his turn of phrase. It felt good not to be alone in this anymore. Had it really only been a day since she had marched out of the office at the farm to yell at Jamie for trespassing on her land? She marveled at how quickly he had become an ally and a friend. Although she had friends back home in New York, this felt different. Jamie wasn't a colleague or social connection, and they weren't only spending time together in order to network. He wasn't an acquaintance or just someone she socialized with rarely. He actually seemed to be invested in her problems, invested in her. She even felt as if he cared whether she succeeded or not, for her benefit, rather than for how that might serve his own purposes. It was nice to know someone here in Harper's Hollow, to have a friend. Especially someone who was so determined to help her.

“So, did you write your note to Santa Claus?” Jamie asked, as he set a kettle to boil on the hob.

Hazel looked at him.

“Ah, right, I forgot. The Grinch.”

“Right.” Hazel laughed. “What about you?”

“I'm not sure Santa has time to worry about me this year,” Jamie said. Not for the first time that day, Hazel noticed that his smile didn't quite reach his eyes, that he wore a tiredness he couldn't quite disguise.

“Thank you,” she said, suddenly.

Jamie frowned at her, nonplussed.

“I figure I haven't actually said it yet.” Hazel tripped over her words in her eagerness to get them out. “Thank you. For helping me sort out this mess. I never would have managed it on my own, and I know you have so much else going on with Emma and moving back into town yourself, and after - ” she trailed off. She'd almost said after losing your wife. But how could she dare to make a comment on that? She had never lost anyone the way Jamie had.
