Underlying each of those iterations of myself was misery. Being a closeted transgender Mormon is an almost biblical ordeal. The leaders of the church see gender as an “essential characteristic” of a person’s “eternal identity and purpose”—not something that can be changed.[12] But it can be changed, of course, which is why they have a policy in place to discipline members who seek reassignment surgery, enforcing the line in the sand they themselves have drawn.[13] Growing up, I thought of being transgender as a sin that I hid from everyone—my parents, my friends, often even myself.

When I was home alone, I would do my best to alter my appearance with the limited tools I had at my disposal—expired makeup from the bathroom closet, a dress stolen from the boxes marked for Goodwill—and shamefully pray for forgiveness later. It was only in college that I began to realize repentance was not the solution.
