“YOU LOOK especially dazed and hopelessly in love,” Sarah said when I sat down in class.

“Don’t say shit like that. I like him. He’s nice and friendly, but I absolutely don’t….” My face fell and my shoulders sagged under the weight of the conversation. I couldn’t say I didn’t love him, because it would be a fucking lie. I turned away from her and lowered my head to my desk. I didn’t want to love him. Sarah left me alone the rest of the morning. After lunch she found me and apologized.

“It’s okay. I was being melodramatic about the whole thing. Austin got in a huge fight with his dad last night and wouldn’t talk about it. Between that, and the band shit, and trying to avoid Maddie, I’m right on the edge of a major freak-out.”

“I know how to cure what ails you for at least a few hours,” she said. She bounced on the balls of her feet, giggled, and then pinned me against the wall.

“You’re not going to kiss me, are you?”

“We’re going to the football game tonight. It’s the final home game of the season.”

“I’d rather have you kiss me.”

She laughed and pinched my cheek.

“It’s raining those little ice balls. I’m sure they’ll cancel,” I said.

“It’s football. They don’t cancel.”

“But… I can’t handle the cold. I’m a big wuss,” I whined. “I refuse your invitation.”

The corners of her mouth turned down, and I knew I was in for a very loud scolding.

“You are going to be there to show your support for Clark. He would never ask you to come, but I know it would please him to see you there. He’s pretty sure some college scouts are coming to see him play. Plus if the team wins, they get to go to state. It’s important to him.”

I snorted. “He just wants to see my hair freeze off.”

She scowled and punched me in the arm.

“Ow! Okay, Okay, I’ll go to the stupid game.” I slipped out of her grip and kneaded my sore bicep.

She wrapped her arms around my neck, hugging me tightly. “Thank you. Make sure you dress warm.”

She skipped away, singing one of my songs. As she moved down the hall, several kids joined in singing. The weirdness that had become my life was staggering.
