CONSTANCE

Arriving at the villa my family owned on a little island near Saint Lucia in the Caribbean was a bittersweet moment for me. I hadn’t been here since I was little and my parents still took me on family vacations. They’d stopped doing that when I’d been in my teens and they’d enrolled me in boarding school.

I had good memories of this place, though. Possibly some of the only happy ones I had of my childhood.

As we walked into the large house, the staff had lined up to greet me, and surprisingly, I recognized more than a few of them. Tears filled my eyes as I was hugged and welcomed back warmly, the housekeeper and butler completely ignoring the training I knew all my parents household staff was sent on.

“Ms. Creed,” Angie, who’d been our housekeeper here since I was a child, whispered as she held me tight. “It’s so good to see you. We thought you’d forgotten about us.”

“Never,” I promised, swallowing back the tears as I stepped away to introduce her to Reece. “This is my husband, Reece Walsh. Reece, this is Angela and her husband, Edward.”

They hugged him, too, once again ignoring their training, but he didn’t seem to mind. Once Edward let go of him, he smiled. “Come, let us give you the tour. We were told to ready two bedrooms. Is that right?”

“Yes, that’s right,” I said cheerfully, but I didn’t feel that way.

We were still dealing with the fallout from last night, and the nostalgia I felt being back here didn’t make things any easier. Unless I was mistaken, the last vacation we’d taken here had been with Nick and his family, and that just made my emotions feel even more jumbled up.

Reece and I hadn’t spoken on the jet ride over, or while we’d been packing early this morning, or as we’d traveled to the house from the airstrip. It was like there was a wall between us now, and we’d need to pull it down so we could do what we’d been sent here to do.

I’d need to shake off this sense of melancholy before I’d be able to do it.

Edward showed us to our rooms and left us to get settled. When the doors closed behind him, I looked around my spacious bedroom and realized it’d been changed completely since I’d last been here. Back then, it’d been made up for a little girl. The walls, curtains, and bedding had been pink and there had been a princess castle tent in the corner.

Now it was all white and navy, done up like all the other generic guest rooms in the house. I sighed, ambling over to the windows where at least the view was still the same. Beach and ocean for as far as the eye could see, it had been one of my favorite properties to visit as a child.

I do miss the princess castle, though. I stood by the window for a few long minutes, opening it up to let in some fresh air on the gentle breeze.
