Chapter Eight

How do I look?”

Danielle somberly studies me before breaking into a grin. “You look exactly the same as you did when you asked me ten minutes ago.”

I laugh. “Sorry. I suppose I was hoping that you’d say these stupid crutches had become invisible or something.”

“Are you kidding me? The crutches aren’t going to matter, Sav. You look even more gorgeous than usual.” After a moment, her smile falls. “But I wish your loveliness wasn’t going to be wasted on Erik Prescott. Too bad Doctor Kent can’t see you tonight. He’d lose his mind.”

Ignoring her, I check my reflection again in the side mirror of a car that is parked along the curb. After wearing scrubs almost every day for the past year, getting dressed up feels kind of foreign to me now. Lately, I’ve been considering it an accomplishment if I style my hair into anything more than a ponytail; it’s a bonus if I remember makeup.

But this evening is different. This evening, I’m kind of meeting up with Erik for a kind of date. Well, it’s more like a group thing, but still. So after much deliberation, digging through my closet, and consulting Danielle, I chose to wear a fitted red top and black pants. I styled my hair in loose curls. And in addition to mascara, I even applied eyeliner, eye shadow, and lip gloss.

Unfortunately, I think the crutches are killing the whole look.

“So do you ever plan on actually going inside the restaurant, Sav?” Joel inquires playfully. “Personally, I’d rather stay out here all night and stare through the windows, trying to freak out Doctor Bench Press Prescott.”

Danielle snickers, and I blush. For several minutes now, the three of us have been congregated on the sidewalk outside of The Blue Room, one of the most popular restaurants in town, while I’ve been trying to get brave enough to enter the building.

Admittedly, I didn’t think tonight was actually going to happen. After Erik spoke to me in Fast Track about going out, I never got an email from him. I figured that he had forgotten. I attempted explaining to Danielle that Erik’s oversight was understandable—he is a busy intern, after all—but she wouldn’t let him off the hook. And this morning, when Danielle caught me checking my email for the one millionth time, she finally went on a tirade about how you can’t trust orthopedists and Doctor Kent never would have forgotten to contact me. She concluded by declaring that we were going to have a girls’ night in, bingeing on ice cream and watching rom-coms.

But about two hours ago, Erik actually sent me an email about where he and other residents were going for dinner. Danielle practically hurled herself in front of my computer and demanded that I tell Erik I had other plans. But I calmly pointed out how hypocritical it was for her to insist that I refuse Erik’s invite when she is always accusing me of avoiding romance. She had no rebuttal and finally agreed to accompany me.
