They moved through the crowd around the fountain until they had a clear pathway. Callie chewed her lip and sent a silent prayer up to Abby. If youâre here, sweetheart, please know Iâll always love you. No one will ever replace you. Iâll just expand my heart to hold the two of you.
Callie felt Danaâs eyes on her as she tossed in a coin indicating she was hoping to return to Rome. After admitting to Maggie last night that she didnât want to live her life alone, sheâd thought about Abby, about their love, and several times during the day, sheâd read the letter sheâd left. Abby had not only given her permission to find someone else, sheâd encouraged her to fall in love again and be happy. Then Callie had acknowledged to Abby, and herself, that her feelings for Dana went beyond friendship.
She heard Danaâs soft gasp as she tossed a second coin which meant she wanted to fall in love, though not necessarily with an Italian as the legend predicted. She glanced at Dana as she tossed the third coin, wishing to marry the person she met. Dana elbowed her. âWelcome to the three coins in the fountain club. I joined last night.â
Callie blew out a breath. âItâs scary, but it feels right. Iâm glad youâre a member too.â Taking Maggieâs advice, she was letting herself feel what she felt. She slipped her arm through Danaâs.
âIâm ready to go to bed.â Realizing what sheâd said, she blushed. As attracted as she was to Dana, she wasnât ready for sex with her. Or anyone for that matter. âI mean Iâm ready to go back to the hotel.â
Dana pressed Callieâs arm closer. âI knew what you meant.â
The evening was clear and warm, the lighting dim, and except for the murmur of the few people they passed, the only sound was the echo of their footsteps. Callie felt as if they were encased in their own private bubble. Did Dana feel the connection? It was more than just the warmth she felt where their bodies touched. It feltâ¦romantic.
She side-eyed Dana. She looked far away. Was she feeling romantic too? Lost in their own thoughts neither spoke until they were standing in the hallway outside their rooms.
Dana cleared her throat. âAbout tomorrow. Iâm interested in the tour of the Colosseum and the Forum. What about you?â
âDefinitely. I had enough me time today and it sounds intriguing. Meet for breakfast as usual?â
