Old looms can cause all sorts of problems, from high resistance to cable faults, wire breakage at points where you cannot get at them and, worst of all, electrical fires. High currents through high resistance cables causes heat, heat causes fires. An electrical fire in a steel-bodied car is bad enough, in a GRP car it could be catastrophic.

When I first bought my Elan +2, the wiring was awful. I had 18 volts coming out of the dynamo regulator and only 8 volts at the headlamps. The regulator had been re-adjusted in an attempt to give some illumination but on numerous occasions the voltage would fluctuate so much it blew headlight bulbs all the time. I eventually removed the volt losses by remaking all the connections, fitting a ring main earthing system and ensuring the loom was in a serviceable condition. I eventually fitted an alternator to power the heated rear screen I had fitted, and also quartz halogen headlights to improve upon the standard Elan, meagre, night time candlepower.

If you feel you are not up to this, for piece of mind, buy a new loom.
