“Home again…home again…” Christian mumbled as the cab driver drove off twenty-five bucks richer. He looked around the neighborhood, so cold and streamlined compared to Kevin’s, and sighed.
This was a dangerous mood to be in. It was too easy to remember all of the shit decisions he’d made in the past when he’d felt like this. For so long he’d been trying to fill that hole with anything and everything but who he knew would fit. As the weariness washed over him and the hurt followed right after it, he knew he had to tread carefully.
Christian wanted to run again. He wanted to run fast and far—not from Kevin, but from the pain and uncertainty that being around him had already caused.
He couldn’t yet make sense of this man and what he wanted. Sure, he could react to the words he’d heard—that Kevin said he needed that kiss—but… Kevin also had his own life to deal with and Christian wasn’t going to be hypocritical about it and make demands. How could he? He’d broken hearts with lies about his own sexuality. Kat’s face as he broke the news still haunted him.
Whether or not Kevin told Risa about himself was something he had to do in his own time because ultimatums would only push Kevin to resent him. There was enough regret in their past without adding in statements that started with “You must…” and ended with “or else.”
Now, getting a taste of being the secret in someone’s life, it should make sense, right? Christian shouldn’t feel so hurt…
But he did. He was hurting pretty bad at the moment. Risa had been shocked to see him tonight because Kevin lied to her about their history; that much was certain. Christian didn’t know the full story of what Risa thought she knew. He could sense her hesitance to cast a vote in his favor.
He groaned and instead of walking up the stairs to his front door, he went the opposite direction toward the fountain in front of his house. Kicking off his shoes and socks, he tugged up his pant legs and stuck his feet in the cold water. The dried blood on his jeans brought a deeper frown.
It would be easy to reconcile his hurt with the fear he’d seen in Kevin’s eyes as he left, but it was easier to think of the horror on his face as he discovered Selena and realized his secret was out. That expression told Christian everything he needed to know. Kevin wasn’t ready for this. He wasn’t ready for Christian’s touch or kisses. His life was locked up tight and as people started to figure out what was going on: Jack, Selena, Kevin’s buddies, maybe even the Marines at the bowling alley, Kevin would know he was losing control of the information. The first thing to go in order for him to regain his balance and pull out of the spin would be Christian.
No doubt, he should’ve seen this coming. He did the leaving last time—immature and scared, distracted by all the wrong reasoning.
