“Theo, your shift ailment doesn’t need to be a life sentence. I can help you.”

I could see the tension run through his body like a tightened rope, and the puffs of his breath grew thick, drifting through the air like cigar smoke. “It’s not so simple for me, Eli,” he said. “I hear what you’re saying, but I don’t feel like I deserve to fly again.”

“You do,” I said.

I wanted him to see what I could see—that he was deserving of healing, that he didn’t need to suffer. And I wanted to give him comfort. I knew there was nothing I could say at that moment that would change his mind, so I slid my arm across his broad back and held him. It felt like the most natural thing to do. He leaned gently against me, just enough for me to know that my touch was welcome. His heat seemed to surround me, and it mingled with a pulse that was growing deep inside of me. I could feel that same tingling energy that came at every worst possible moment, but I didn’t fear it, and I didn’t fight it, and it didn’t surge out of control. I took a long, deep breath, filling my lungs with the cold air and the smell of the pine trees, but also the new warm, deep scent that was Theo’s.
