Three days later, Willow sat at a broad oak desk surrounded by stacks of books and reams of notes in her own scrawl. Though the early morning sun streamed in the row of windows behind her, the green banker's lamp on the desk was still on from the night before. She had not slept.

Nearly a week had passed since the reclamation of Sunnydale and the extermination of the vampires who had inhabited City Hall. A search of the premises had turned up three entire rooms on the third floor of City Hall that were lined with books. Giles's library. He had learned what magick he knew from these ancient volumes and Willow knew that if she was going to figure out how to separate the two souls within Buffy, it would be here.

She set up camp that same night in the first of the rooms. Oz and Buffy took turns bringing her meals, most of which she did not eat. In the wee hours of the morning on which Xander was buried, she thought she found the beginnings of the answer.

Three days later, she was certain of it.

Exhausted, terrified by the thought of looking at herself in the mirror after days of little food and less sleep, she nevertheless felt a rush of excitement. She slid two books off the desk, both of which had pages that were yellowed and flimsy with age.

The previous morning she had allowed herself an hour to shower in what had once been the mayor's private bath and to change clothes, and now her hair was pulled up with just a rubber band. As she walked out of the room, she took the rubber band from her hair and shook it out, no longer needing to keep it out of her face. It felt good. She felt good.

It was shortly after seven in the morning when Willow rapped on Buffy's door. She paused briefly before knocking again. The third time around she heard Buffy moving inside and a moment later the door opened. There were several books on the floor next to a lamp but otherwise the room was spartan, a simple bedroll and a small duffel jammed with clothes all that Buffy had to her name.

Buffy wore a baby blue tank top and pajama pants and she stretched as she ushered Willow inside.

"Sorry to wake you," Willow said.

"S' okay," Buffy replied. “I was up late, training with Anna. She's actually pretty good." Even as she spoke, however, the Slayer's eyes went to the books in Willow's hands and then their eyes met.

“This is it?”

Willow nodded. "I had it sort of figured out days ago, but it took me a long time to figure out what to do with that knowledge."

Both women hesitated. After a moment, Buffy shrugged.

"What've you got?"

Willow walked over and set her books on the desk and then leaned against it. "A lot of this you know, some of it maybe you've only guessed. Some of it, honestly, I'm kinda guessing, too, based on what you've told me.
