Mikey entered the small bathroom in the clubhouse where Rem brushed his teeth. After their unsettling conversation with Rudd, they’d all taken turns taking quick showers to conserve the hot water, eaten some dinner, and afterward had discussed the best way to approach the next day. Wondering if any of them would actually get any rest, Mikey pulled her hair back into a messy bun.

Rem spit, rinsed his mouth and wiped his face with a towel. Eyeing the door, he closed it and faced her as she wet her toothbrush. “Can I ask you something?”

Sensing his anxiety, she turned toward him. “What?”

He hesitated and fiddled with the towel. “Is there any scenario where you would consider hanging back tomorrow and staying here?”

Her immediate reaction was to argue but she understood his fears. She told herself to talk it through with him because if she didn’t, he would be a nervous wreck that night and the next day, and neither of them could afford that. Keeping her tone light, she put her hand over his. “Do you think that’s going to keep me safe?”

Indecision clouded his features. “I don’t know. It makes me feel better though. I don’t want you out there with this thing running around.”

“You think I want you out there?”

He shook his head. “No. I know you don’t.”

“None of us like this. I’m sure Daniels is worried about Marjorie and Mason is worried about Val.”

“And I bet you a million bucks they’re all having this same conversation.”

She considered that. “They probably are, but do you think Marjorie or Val will go for it?”

He tucked a strand of his long hair behind his ear. “I don’t know. They might.”

Mikey doubted that either Marjorie or Val would stay behind. “I know you guys want to protect us but leaving us here isn’t the answer. It could make us vulnerable.”

“If we’re out there looking for Trick and searching for that phone, that makes us targets. That’s why I want you here. I realize nothing’s guaranteed, but if I…”

She squeezed his hand. “If you what?”

He met her gaze. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you. I’ll give my life first.”

Mikey knew he was thinking of Jennie, his first love, and how he’d lost her. “I’d do the same for you.”

“Which is exactly why you should stay here.”

She stepped closer to him. “Rem, listen to me. I love you for wanting to keep me in a bubble so I’ll never get hurt—”

“That asshole Ruben planned to kill you.”

“I know, but we’re all still alive. Once we get Trick back, we’ll find the phone or the keys and get out of here.”

“We both know it’s not going to be that simple. There’s a real possibility someone isn’t coming back from this.”

“What about Daniels? He’s at just as much risk as me, if not more. Are you going to ask him to stay?”

Rem pulled back and leaned against the sink. “He and I both signed up for the dangerous stuff. We risk our lives every day.
