Chapter VI

Descent into Madness

"Execute every act of thy life

as though it were thy last."

- Marcus Aurelius

Aurelius had lost count of the times he had relived this hellish nightmare. Again, and again, he had tried every way he could think of to save the fleet; or at least to save Cassia. Nothing made a bit of difference. Then it occurred to him to try using the armor's capabilities inside the ship.

The Hastati Armor was designed with the capacity to jump over obstacles, including small buildings. In effect, it could fly for short distances. It also possessed a massive amount of firepower. Although the thought was repulsive to him, he realized that by utilizing the full power of the armor, he should be able to make it to the bridge before the insane Helmsman began his killing spree.

At least he hoped he could get there in time. If not, things would just begin all over again. He would feel bad about the damage he would do to the panicking crewmen on the command deck, but if it did not work, they would be there the next time he tried to reach the bridge. As far as Aurelius was concerned, it was worth a try. He didn't want to think about the number of casualties that he would inflict to test his theory.

He didn’t hesitate when he opened his eyes and was back on the dropship. He instantly hit the release on his drop harness and stepped free of the frame. Once he was clear, he ignored the screaming pilot and the chaotic cries of the cohorts. Heading directly for the hatch, he hit the override and stepped out onto the flight deck. His brain had long-since grown used to the sickening lurch of the gravitic field, so he was able to ignore it. Kicking in the jump jets on his boots, he reached the lift in one leap.

Hitting the button to take him to the command deck, he stood by ready to explode from the lift car as soon as the doors rumbled open. The ride to the command level seemed interminably long, but he was ready when the car began to slow down. He engaged the jump jets the instant the doors opened enough for his armor to pass through.

With a sudden lurch of speed, he leapt out of the lift car and scattered panicking crewmen like bowling pins. From the force of the impact, he knew that several of them would not rise again. The second leap brought the door to the bridge almost within reach, yet still agonizingly far away.

The third leap brought him right to the door. Impacting with the door shook him to his core and caused him to momentarily lose focus. With titanic effort, he cleared his head and struck the door activation panel with his gauntleted fist. Instantly, the massive steel doors began rolling open and he could see the Helmsman was just in the process of overpowering the security officer that had been sent to escort him from the bridge.
